is there a way to select all but 1 column from a table i.e. select all but col 2?

The only way I know of is to select all of the columns you do want to select. If there is 20 columns and you only want 19, then you would have to put all 19 column names in your select.
Of course, you could always to a SELECT * (szlamany is going to beat me up side the head with a baseball bat when he reads that ), and simply ignore whatever is returned in the column you don't want when you start dealing with the resulting recordset, but that doesn't seem to me to be an efficient way of doing things.
