Negative Reputation
I received this comment 'Stop just posting 'I agree' in every thread you encounter just to get some post counts', I just wanted to back-up the idea of another poster so the thread starter would be a little more clarified but I have been given a negative reputation, I dont care about post counts, I just want to help others..... You could see my threads....

Re: Negative Reputation
That's a shame - it's a misuse of a rating to give anyone a negative rating unless it fits the requirements in the AUP.
People on this forum think way too much of themselves sometimes...

Did the person have the courage of their convictions to leave their forum name with comment?

Re: Negative Reputation
Same thing happened to me for 'chit-chat'-TYPE threads. I.E. Too short, and opinion-based only. It seems that I'm not allowed to be friendly anymore. I have to remember that there are dual standards,as I post more than the average allows.

Whoever did that to you committed an injustice.
I just returned all your posts, and the snippets shown of each and every one did not seem to contain a single "I agree".
Indeed, they all seem to indicate that your are consistently providing suggestions to help whomever it is that you are posting replies to.
If any of those posts contain an "I agree", I doubt its the only thing you said.

Re: Negative Reputation
Dee-u, I've asked the person who gave you the negative rating if they really meant to.
In general I don't think people should post "I agree" or similar comments. I have two reason for saying this: One, it's somewhat arrogant in that (at least to me) it implies that your opinion should have weight, and two, what a mess we'd have if everyone did it. Having said that I do normally allow those kind of comments unless I start seeing someone do it a lot. I admit that my determining what "a lot" is is purely subjective, but I try to be fair.

He probably means that this is real evidence to support the presence of potential for abuse. What if the poster never spoke out? It would not have been so dutifully taken care of.

Re: Negative Reputation
I'm with the Rhino on this one - I've read the FAQ, but I still fail to see what the reputation system actually does.
I'm all for feedback (good and bad), but the reputation points I have received have come with little explanation/justification - except the negative one (which hurt more than I would have expected incidentally ).
I guess I could be persuaded that points are a good idea - I just have no reason to believe it. Do all the good posters on this forum really do it in the hope that they get rep points? Or just because they enjoy sharing their knowledge around?
Just my 2 cents worth. I'll shut up now...

In my opinion and from what I've seen none of the "good" posters do it just for the points. That's not to say that they don't like the ego boost they get from having points (I know I do) but they also helped before the reputation system was in use. The main thing that will come from the reputation system is a measure of who the "good" programmers really are. Remember we are only about 3 months into it and while there are already a few people who are breaking away from the pack point-wise, in a year it will be much more obvious who the good people are. Before the reputation system the only criteria that the general public could use to determine who was good was the number of posts a person had and that is obviously flawed because someone who asks 5000 questions might look "good" to someone who didn't know any better. The reputation system will correct that.

Re: Negative Reputation
I've got to agree with Marty on this...
If you click on the Members List and sort by Reputation all the people that I would expect are at the top of that list - making very valid contributions to the questions asked on this forum (I'm just above Marty right now - but that won't last for long). RhinoBull is right up there as well - in spite of all his thrashing and fighting...
RobDog is at the top - and if you have seen the breath of knowledge this person has, the desire to help those in need (and the obvious free time - or lack of employer supervision - it takes ) - it's well deserved and should be noted for all to see.
We are about to take our shop out of the VB6 world and into VB.Net - I know that I will look at the rep points of the people responding to my huge wave of questions - so that I'm not misled by lack of experience but led by a full base of knowledge instead.

You excuse me Martin but this reps system has nothing to do with being a GOOD programer lor BAD - not a single bit !!! I can be as sarcastic as it gets and I know that that might give me a bunch of negs - does that mean I am a bar programer ?!?!?!
You know, I've proven evrything I had to and not necessary here - my only goal for hanging in this place is because it's a fun and I like helping - I really do!
Also, I don't really give a damn thing about who and how reps me - I admit I might have complained about unfair negs once or twice and perhaps will in the future but that's about as far as my concern goes.
My very best regards.

Re: Negative Reputation
It should be noted that the members with the highest rankings "advertise" for rep ranking links in their sigs. This is a fact and I am not disapproving or chastising in any way.
Ie.. if I were to advertise a rep ranking in my sig my own rep would sky-rocket (I think). I know in my heart that I help most people here and this is enough in itself to keep me coming back to help more.
This is not to say I share Rhino's passion against it, I just see it as kind of phony when you have that link in tour sig and others do not. It definately tips the scale in your favor to do so...
Personally I hope that the peeps that I help will come to know and trust my opinions based on my own merit.

You can look at the number of little green boxes they have. If you run your cursor over them you can get a finer indication. If you want to see where people stand in "the race", go to Members and click on the Reputation column.

Not everybody does Also I don't have a problem with the people who have something like "If someone has helped you please rate their post". There are people of course who have less shame and put things like "Rate my post", and while I wish they wouldn't do that I'm not going to do anything about it.

That's true, you can't see the actual numbers. A member can see the last 20(?) and can see their exact total in User CP.

It started out being 5, but Brad doubled it to the last 10 reps.
Sure wish the name was shown. Mods would still have to get involved to retract them.
I guess if there were more problems with those negative's others would take notice.

Re: Negative Reputation
OK. It's a new thing. I should give it time to develop.
I agree that lots of the more helpful people appear to be top of the list - but there are also plenty of people further down who 'are on a distinguished road'.
And there is still no means of targeting your question at high-rep posters, you post and take pot luck.
I have a few more questions:
1. What does the color-scheme mean? I know that red is bad and green is good, but what dioes gray mean?
2. szlamany, why would you give more weight to high-rep posters? I can see some good reasons, but plenty more bad ones - my few points have been gained in the Classic VB and DB fora. However, I do occasionally mooch around the C# and VB.Net areas too. If I post some rubbish there, but have a gazillion VB-based rep points why does that make my opinion worth listening to? Shouldn't you be using your experience (and it certainly appears from your posts that you have plenty) to sort the wheat from the chaff?
3. Do negative posts get moderated, or is it open season? And are there very many negatives on a daily basis (generally speaking)?

1. Gray means the person who rep'd you did not have enough "value" yet to give points - so even though they could rep and post a comment, they cannot affect the actual number of rep points for someone yet.
2. That would not be the only factor - but a high-rep point person would probably get more attention from me with an opinion than a non-rated person. Combine that with join date and totals posts and you have a good idea of the activity level a person on the forum has.
3. I believe there is no moderation - only if you complain and Marty can get the negative rep'er to retract.
I gotta say I was new to this forum a year ago - so it was really hard to know who to respect and believe. After 6 months it was obvious. With this point system it should be obvious to a new person on the forum immediately.
