Windows 98 or 2000
If you had to make a choice, would you use Windows 98 or Windows 2000?
Would it be not worth installing Win2k on the specs below?
Would it run much slower with Win2k than 98?
Im basically upgrading my old PC for my mum.
As you can see, it has a small footprint and looks nice, which is why she wants to upgrade rather than replace.

P166MHz
87Mb RAM
4.3 Gb Hard Disk
Unfortunately the specs are pretty poor, I've managed to scrounge some RAM and a slightly bigger hard drive, but there is nothing I can do about the processor as it is limited by the motherboard, which has all the ports in a different side to which you would normally expect.

I would say it depends on what she plans to use it for. 2000 is more stable than 98 but it dosn't support as much software as easily if I recall correctly. I know there was a few games I use to play that wouldn't run on 2000 but would on 98. But if she is just a normal mom thats wanting to surf the web and maybe do some word processing I'd say go with 2000 for the extra stability.

Re: Windows 98 or 2000
I have Win2K on my laptop. It has 133MHz, 128Mb RAM, and 4.3Gb HDD. It runs slow as PIIIP. But I wouldn't trade it for Win98 even if it is a lot faster. It is much more stable. And it can compile my simple apps, and I am not using it for more then that and to write a bit on it anyway. But if you are going to use heavy apps on it. Then it will go VERY VERY slow.

I have W2K Workstation running on a P3 @ 550 mhxz
All I do is surf the web occasionally, and use it for my printer. I connect with my wireless laptop. For that it is fine. Boots kind of slow, but I have time...

I would definitely steer clear from Win98.
Don't know if Win2K will be slower, but geez, the memories on got of Win98.... No thanx!!!

I would definately go with 2000, much more stable than 98.
