    Audio lagging behing video

I'm trying to digitize my old video tapes -recorded with an analog camera- by playing them back in a video player connected to the TV card of my computer. I found that once a file had been saved, the audio signal was delayed about 5 sec. relative to the start of the video. I corrected this offset with VirtualDub, but then found that a new delay appeared farther ahead, as if one of the tracks were dilated in time.
    Any ideas?

Possible that you are capturing to a hard drive that is too slow...

Or have something else running while capturing - like virus software.

Actually... It sounds like you dont have a 100% compatible audio codec installed on your machine.

    Try these:

Wouldn't the capture software/hardware have the codec's that it wanted to use already on the machine?

He didn't say he captured it on some other PC and copied the files...

Usually that is true. But in most apps like Pinacle studio and Adobe Premiere and Avid, you can choose other codecs then the default codec.

What app are you using krtxmrtz. In most apps you can choose a delay for when to start the capturing. It might be that you start to capture before the cam is starting to send information. I usualy use 2sec delay on my camera.

    I am aware of that.

We have SPEED RAZOR on our video editing desk with a FastDV card for capturing. It's 4 years old at this point - but was state of the art back in the day!

My point was that if you capture it on a machine it should play back on that machine.

We've experienced problems with other app's running.

Yeah, other apps running AT ALL, is a major issue. But in most apps you can often see how many frames that where dropped during th capturing. The frame dopp often tells you how much your adio is out of sync.

When I did my last video I found out that even browsing VBF and capturing with Pinacle at the same time made it drop a couple of hundred frames, making the audio get out of sunc. More expensive apps like Adobe PRemiere and Avid has a setting to avoid this though. But I have only tried them once, and I don't have them on my home machine, so I can't give a screeny.

I thought codecs were small files that you just copied to your system, but it appears you've got to install the whole application featured in those sites.

I'm using Pinacle TV studio to view and record the movie coming from the video player. However I recently got Adobe Premiere, though I haven't had the time to learn it yet and it doesn't look easy.

It isn't that easy. But I managed to grasp the most importen thing in one day and night...

My flat mate (he is on a vecation now) have it. So I used his computer. I have the key to his room, so tell me if you want a small crash course, or help to do certain tasks, and I can ask him if I am allowed to go in and use his computer, and take some snapshots.

That would be nice but take your time, I'll be a few days on vacation as well. And maybe I'll try with VirtualDub first, changing the frame rate, or perhaps I'll disable Norton AV and a few other proggies as suggested by Szlamany.

Well, I've tried VirtualDub for the capture and it worked nicely, no video/audio desynchronism occurs unlike with Pinnacle's TV Studio or Ulead Video Studio.

However I'm a total newbie to the field of video and I get lost in the jungle of formats, compression codecs, how should I do the capture in order not to further deteriorate the quality and so on. For example, I thought mpeg files would use less Mb than avi files but sometimes it's the other way round, maybe there are some parameters I have overlooked. This is what I'd need a tutorial about, something that provides a good overall undertanding of the entire video capture/ manipulation/save/DVD creation, etc, even though I must then go on my own into the details.
