Hello everybody,
I need to read PDF file and search for specific string in the file. Is this possible with vb, or is there any code/component that is free ??
Thanks.

Re: Read PDF File
When you dowload the free Adobe reader, there's a ocx called pdf.ocx that is instaled inside Adobe directory. You only need to add this ocx to your toolbox and place it inside a form. After this, assign this src propertie to the file you need to open. After this point, you will have your PDF file inside, and you can search it with Adobe thecnologies

Re: Read PDF File
Yeah I have used pdf.ocx to view a pdf file on my visual basic form. But how can I read the file and search for some text in the pdf document. I am not in the position to purchase a component. It will be great if there is something free.

You can sign up at Adobe as a Registered Member for free. It will give you access to some SDks and
code samples. All they ask is that you dont post their samples or code, I think.

I wasn't aware the PDF.OCX was on a machine because of the free-reader download...
I just put it into a project and it appears to have the full PDF menu - search is right there.
I'm assuming that since you said you used this, you are looking to SEARCH in code, without having the user click some ADOBE search buttons - right?

Re: Read PDF File
Yes, I need to search with code, without even viewing the file on my form.

Then the only way is by using the Adobe SDKs.

The thing that bothers me the most about ADOBE is that nasty startup time. Lately my customers have started using things like CUTEPDF - they are so much faster to start and create a file with the CUTEPDF driver.
Not sure if you can find non-Adobe tools - but if you can, I would recommend looking at them as well.
I know that I would not be happy with a user clicking a search button and getting that ADOBE splash screen while dll's and what not get loaded...
