Google does look at your meta tags - in most cases your meta description is used by Google in their search results. However it's widely acknowledged that Google doesn't use them to rank your page - it's all about page content and links!

The frequency that the Googlebot crawls your page depends upon the PageRank of your website. Can be weeks to several times a day!

and what affects the page rank?

I'm asking for a friend, and I understand that he paid Google to have the site show up higher in search results (he said)

I told him before the meta tags were no longer necessary with the bots spidering the site, but he wanted them, and now he wants to know why the terms in the metatag won't return results for his pages.

It has been about 10 days since I added the tags for him.

Paid Google to get up the ranks? - I very very much doubt it. I think he's telling you a few tales. If Google did that then every body would be paying and the index would be useless! The whole idea of Google is you absolutely cannot pay to get a ranking.

He could be talking about sponsored links (to the right of the natural results) - but you bid for every search term there - no need for optimising web pages.

Page Rank is based on lots of things - If you have a high PageRank you are seen as an important site and therefore you site is given a higher ranking against search terms relevant to your site. If you get other relevant sites to yours linking to you then this will impove your PageRank (its like a popularity contest). Don't just get any links though Google its getting better at filtering out the unrelated links and link farms.

Search Google about Google SEO and you'll get loads of links to help you. I find WebProNews good for SEO advice.

Metatags are still needed its just they are not used by Google as they were open to abuse (other search engines still use them to a certain extent).

Optimising for search engines is a skill that can take some time to learn especially as the algorithms they use are secret and you are constantly trying to second guess them.

Let me know the website URL if you can and I'll let you know what I think of it search engine wise.

Google is one of the most inaccurate search engines ever designed by man. I wouldn't rely on them too much.

Maybe not the most accurate but the most used - you cannot ignore the traffic a high ranking on Google creates - it blows all other search engines away in this respect.

Google doesn't care about my MeaTags on my page. MSN search do though...

Thanks DJ. That was very informative.

    Sure. The site is www.accuracyauto.com

They are news content providers on a variety of automobile issues in Japan, China, Australia. Currently the site is in Japanese and English. They also have a translation service in China from any of the 3 languages to any other.

If you navigate to the main page, you can see the extensive tags I put there (I built the site per my friend's ideas).

Take a look if you have a minute. It isn't my finest work but my friend had a very precise vision for it.

    Thanks again.
