Random question alert!!!!
Do modern Aircraft Carriers have the ability to scuttle (sink themselves terminally) in order to avoid falling into the hands of the enemy?
If you were the last man alive on the ship and there was 200 enemy destroyers in sight, it would be the sensible thing to do.
Can they physically do that without detonating a bomb onboard?

Not sure. I would imagine all of the fleet have scuttling capability. However I would imagine only the Captain or First Officer would have authority so a normal seaman couldonly damage nav control so as to stop it being captured etc etc

Reminds me of a video game situation to where you have to single handedly destroy 100's of enemy's before they get you. Life is a video game, so I'd get a hold of a cannon, missile launcher, or maybe one of them aircrafts and kill anything that moves! Unfortunately I only have one life and there's no score board. Wish I can do cheats. Oh well.

I'd imagine they probably do have the capability. I know most ships have hatches called scuttle hatches. But I think it's more likely a friendly strike would be called in to scuttle the ship.
Here's to us!

Darned few, and they're all dead!

Of course they can scuttle themselves. Shut down the power plant (thus preventing the bilge pumps from working), open all hatches through the water tight bulkheads, then open the seacocks. Even if the opening is no bigger than a garden hose, the ship will sink....eventually.

Of Course. turn off the cooling systems for the nuclear reactors. That'll scuddle that baby right into the upper atmosphere. Why would any one have to scuddle an Aircraft carrier? If it comes to that, there are a helluva lot bigger problems to worry about than stolen technology.

I was just wondering what would happen if such a situation arose. Its not like I was going to nick 120000 tons of hardware. Well not now anyway.

You're an underacheiver
If you do ever get around to it. Snag me a couple depth charges. They'd come in handy when fishing season rolls around.

ROFL
Do you realize how big an aircraft carrier is? It would take 3 centuries to scuttle using a hutch the size of a garden hose. They'd have to slide open the bottom to really scuttle it. I liked the cooling system comment. Just make sure you man the lifeboats, then let whoever wants it can have it, huh?

Well, you know guys don't always hit the toilet first time, some of it goes on the floor. These things are all cumulative. Therefore older ships will already be a few millimetres sunk than new ones!
HAH, what say you to that? Mr Smartypants.
OK fair enough, you'd have to let off a 500kg FAE in the lower crew decks to get it to sink in a couple of hours. You'd have to find the ship's cat first though.
