    Solaris

Has anyone here used Solaris? How is it compared to Linux and Windows? Does it even have a GUI? I've tried several different OSes but never Solaris

    Re: Solaris

I've used it a fair bit. It compares to Windows much the same way as any other *nix system does. Compared to Linux, it comes with all the same GUIs (KDE, Gnome etc) and you can do all the same stuff. Solaris is really more for enterprise stuff. However, you can download it for free for x86 platforms as with Linux

To be honest, unless you need it's enterprise capabilities I'd go with Linux, or if you want to try Unix, one of the BSD family (freeBSD, netBSD etc).

So would it be considered another flavor of linux like Fedora or something based on unix like OS X?

is there any real advantage going to Solaris over Linux or BSD?

Solaris is a flavour of UNIX. Unless you have a requirement for the aforementioned eterprise capabilities, I would just stick with Linux / BSD. They're all much as such anyway
