Re: Reputations
The more people who add a link to their signature the quicker the concept of reputations will spread. Likewise I see no harm in asking a member who is clearly happy with the help you have given them to give a little back by adding to your reputation, it doesn't cost them money and I doubt it takes more than 20 seconds.
I've posted code here to add to signatures:

What are you talking about ??? What is this - a city council or something ???
Reputaion system is totally pointless. I'm here to help and that is THE ONLY PURPOSE for me being here. As simple as that and I don't care for anything else - do you ???
Cheers.

Re: Reputations
I am not up for any arguing here. But I think we have understood what you feel about it. Let those who care - care, and then those who care won't bug you. Thats how simple it is. You never asked about turning of the post count did you. So why make so much fuzz about this. Just leave it, and let the world move on.

No!!!! Its a community ....
We are all here to help each other. Reputations encourage more of a community spirit and introduce some friendly competition, I see no harm in it, it can only do good.

You may be missing the fact that reputations serve two purposes. One they allow people to say thanks in a lasting way, but perhaps more importantly they provide an indication of who to listen to when advice is given, or whose code to use when more than one solution is offered.
Like you I'd do it (and obviously have done it) without getting recognized, but I'm not ashamed to say that I like it when I am recognized.

I said before and I'd say again (as many times as it takes: ordinary "Thank you" is more than enough but more ofthen it's difficult to get even that little.

Was that the reason you "reputated" me (I happened to believe that was you so if not then I appologize up front) in the way it was done?
EDIT: btw, I also want to mention this:
since this new reputation system is here to stay (I stand defited but not because I agree) then I suggest that Feedback forum will have this option disable: people getting rep for expressing personal opinion(s) - rediculous ...

Re: Reputations
I honestly don't see the rating system as a personal goal.
I feel it's purely here so that noobs, or any other users for that matter, can easily see which users are a reliable source of info. This benefits others, not yourself.
When you help someone, and another user clearly posts rubbish, and the person you are trying to help opts for the rubbish response, then it's frustrating. Why should I go to the effort when my advice is ignored? These don't happen very often for me and I am sure you have been in similar situations in the past. I think it's a good way to distinguish "good" users from "bad" uers (excuse my terminology there)
Anyways, I'm not going to rant on about it anymore Each to their own I suppose.
Do you want to disable post count too? JOKING

Re: Reputations
I prefer not to think of reputations and post ratings as a competition. In that regard, I agree with Rhino. I prefer to see it as Marty has said, an easy way to say thanks/"you helped". And a way (in the future) to see who is generally recognized as having been helpful.

Re: Reputations
I think Negative Reputation votes should count for 0 points instead of deducting between 1, and 10! 0 points should generate a RED square. That way, everyone has the same view.

I have to agree with Marty there. But isn't negative points half of the power. Or is it just I that thought that?

Thats correct .
BTW dglienna did you mean to say 0 or did you mean 1? I would have understood your point if you said all negative votes are power 1 but then again I reckon it works how it is .

Re: Reputations
nope. if you give 10 points per approval rating, you also deduct 10 for each disapproval (negative) rating.
Right now, the only ones that give ratings with 0 are newbies.
It would be just as good taking -1, but then there should be a rating for Positive, Neutral (0), and Negative.
I didn't think they'd change that, so I suggested all or none (0).

Re: Reputations
Actually if a normal member had a power of 10 then a negative vote from them will only remove 5. In the case your refering to an Admin has a power of 10 in both directions. Normal members however it will be half if they vote against your post .

Re: Reputations
Everyone starts with 5 points. So if you have 5 then you havn't gotten any aditional points, and not lost any. When you get some you can can click the User CP link, and scrool down to the bottom, and you will see for what thread you got the point, and maybe even a comment.

I personally feel that this is not a good idea. People will soon start repping each other in a bid to increase the little green bars under their user names.
However I am glad to know that the reps are disabled in the chit-chat section of the forum.

The system could be cheated, but thats why we have the spread and if something
like that is noticed then it could be handled appropriately.
Hopefuly after a while things should settle down and it will run a little more smoothly.

but not promoted, so it may just die off, too. at this rate, half of the people don't even know what the rating system is. I guess the book-keeping would get too out of hand if everybody voted 4 times per day.

Re: Reputations
It is so being promoted...You have it in your sig, so do I, in fact most regular members do.
You could always enlarge the font in your sig so it will stand out a little more.
It will pick up...I got 1 vote today, 0 yesterday and 0 the day before that...in fact, apart from today, the last time I got a vote was the 28th I suck.
You also have to remember that there are a regular few users who are here all the time, they know about the rating system, the other users come here on an unregular basis, and thus don't know about the rating system, same goes for noobs. The rating system, to be fair, has only been here for 2 weeks.

Re: Reputations
If you make quality posts and solve a problem for someone usually they are
so happy that they will give you a rep point without even asking. I got 10 points
while I was sleeping for my Change Shortcut Icon code I did for someone.
So it is working and will get better as time goes on.
Its really nice to get good fedback for helping someone. Makes it all
worthwhile.

Re: Reputations
David, well I got Reps from three poeople thats how I got the 10 points.
VisualAd, I dont think that will happen because I help several n00bs and they
do give Reps but for 0 points. After they do their 20 posts, if they have
another issue and I help them again I am sure they will remember the past
help and also it gets them used to giving Reps for good work.
So just because they can actually give a point greater then 0, its still a great
benefit to help someone new because they are usually the most greatful and
appreciative. I will help anyone regardless of their post count or tenure.
I think after a while more and more members will feels the same way.

Re: Reputations
I don't think its going to happen either as most regulars will help anyone regardless, I am just hoping that people don't neglect posts by new members because answering the post of a more regular member will get them more points.
Like you say though, we're a nice bunch.
What constitutes a positive rating is another issue in itelself. I wouldn't expect a rating for answering a question like how to I convert strings to integers and would only rate a post if I felt that it was original, helpful, promoted good techniques and standards and included an explanation of any code.

Re: Reputations
If their problem is big enough they will have 20 posts before the question is totaly solved. That happend me 3-4 days back, and I got a point. Havn't gotten any points after that though. But it still counts on your post count. So everyone should be happy no matter what. But I have to echo VisualAD though. It is importent to be nice and helpfull for new members too. THen they will stay here longer. And we won't start to cry if we get more members do we?

I've gotten more black marks than red ones, but I guess they do remember you when they come back. They then give 1 point for your helping them twice. Too bad the black ones can't count after they become members.
