PAE allows the system to allocate more physical memory to applications, often used on servers

Thanks for that.
Now, I'm pretty sure it wasn't there when I'd first put Windows on it. Any idea what might have put it there, and why?

have you recently upgraded the processor to a 64 bit one? It is also possible to look at the PAE settings in your BIOS settings

Yeah I do have a 64 bit processor, but once I'd installed Windows on this new system, that Physical Address Extension wasn't there. It was only after I started installing things that it appeared.

Yep. I've only found out about what it actually is, rather than why it would suddely appear. I'll have a nose around the BIOS when I get home.
