How do you use your PDA / PocketPC?

What I really want is a good justification, i.e. excuse to cough up the money.

While we're at it, what's the difference, if any, between a "PDA" and a "PocketPC"?

    To get things started:
I'm primarily interested (see other thread here) in using one with a GPS for marine navigation.

    Other possibilities:
    Play MP3s?
    as data bank/calendar/scheduler
    as Cell phone?
    as digital camera?
to play games on while waiting in lines
to carry files around, e.g. from home to office like a briefcase

    Have fun, DaveBo

I am not sure on the definition. But at least in Norwya PocketPC is the term for Hp and Compacs hand held devices. Like the iPaq that I have. PDA I think is more like saying "car" when you actulay want a Ford, or Mercedez or what ever.

So you have PDA the genral hendheld thingy

    - PocketPC one type of them
    - And other brand og them.

I love the iPaq. Most of them you can buy one of the cheapr, and then use jackets for everything. Like GPS, to get more memory, or as a cell phone and so on.

Or you can buy a more expensive one and have more memory, and maybe one with GPS buildt into it.

I first of all use it as a reminder. For when I have to work, how many hours I have worked a month, what homework I have to do, write down the dates of my exam, and friends and girlfriends birthdays, and other days to remember.

I have it also synced so everytime it is in the pod it downloads my new mails so I can read them on the buss or where ever, and it syncs the buss scheduels and flight schedules, so I always have the latest once with me to all times.

And I uses it as an calculator when I have the need for that. And off course I have some small games on it when I get bored....can get pretty nice 3D games on it.

You are completely missing the point! You missed the best thing of all - you can write applications for such a device using VS.Net!!!! how cool is that?

I wish i had the dosh to stump up for a modern palmtop device.
I don't live here any more.

No, that's exactly why I'm asking, to get good input like yours.

And, I agree. I'm already looking into "Smart device" programming and trying to figure out the possibilities. Very cool indeed!

    More applications:

Some act as a TV etc. remote through the IrDA port
Some come with versions of Word and Excel
    Record verbal notes/dictation
    Bible verse lookup
    Keep your mini-golf scores

Do you have X-10 switches? Has their software gotten any better?

I can't remember what I've got... I'll dig out the invoice and check.

It didn't come with any software though.
