it was from the start i installed winxp...

google Online*Virus*Checker. I think one is from TrendMicro. It will scan your drive.

Are you running a firewall if so Norton may not have permission from it to access the Internet. I had the same problem until I set Zone Alarm to allow it to access the internet.

Have you tried checking the hosts file, on xp its "c:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\" i think, the virus might have added symantec address in there which will stop any connection to the address and redirect it to another ip normaly 127.0.0.1

can i delete the map drivers?

do you mean the drive mappings? are they to remote computers? then, you could delete them if they are not connecting, but it doesn't matter.
Start in Safe Mode and see if you have a connection. That wll rule out the OS.
