    I know it's in the message headers, but I don't know anything about it being fake.

    you can usually look at the email headers and see if it's been spoofed. you can look at the origin and if the return path and the reply to fields are different then it's a spoofed email.

    You an look at the recieved headers. They will tell you the computer from host fro mwhich the e-mail originated. Like, with browsing the internet, they can be spoofed though.
