you need to have the attachment box to attach images.
using it this way allows us to attach multiple files to one post insted of just 1 file per post!
PS: marty should have posted an image like this:

This is what I mean: Someone posts an attachment, and then uses that picture in their sig or something. HOW THE HECK DO THEY KNOW THE URL FOR THE ATTACHED IMAGE???
Right one you've uploaded the pic to where ever (it is forced to display the image in that box if there is only one). Then right clikc on the image and choose "Copy Image Location" (Assuming you're in FF, IE users will know to use the property page). Then use that link to put in the IMG tags where ever you like . Unfortunetly you can't disable the attachment preview, the only way is to add more than one file to the post.
BTW another way to get a link to the image is to use the one that will appear under the text box once you've added the attachments, so no need to go back and edit if you want .

if you are still in microsoft's monopoly like me, in IE, all you have to do is right click on the image and click properties and then it tells you where the image is!:

He used an IMG tag with the actual URL of the image. See the posts above for getting the URL.
You can use the button in the editor to insert an IMG tag.

Yes, thats how it used to be before when you wanted to do an in-line image in the post pointing to an attachment on the same thread.
But with the new version if you make a post with an image attached and an in-line img tag, it will still give you the Attachment frame around the image. You need to do an attachmnt in the Support Images Forum. Then do your post with an img tag pointing to the post with the attachment.
