nononono, Workbook corrupted?

I have a workbook that crashes excel as soon as I open it. This has never happened before... I turned on macro virus protection to make sure it wasn't code (it's my workbook)

Whatever is doing it, it happens right after it tries to update linkes...

Would saving while my computer was doing other things cause this? (I happened to have some java programs stuck in infinite loops running while I saved, taking up a lot of processor speed)

Any suggestions? Any hope that 2003 can open it if 97 can't?

Interesting... there's a " - [Group]" after the workbook name in the title bar... that shouldn't be there? (Before it crashes I can see it clearly)

I transferred the file to my laptop, which has 2003, and it opened.

But it wasn't pretty.

The best I can describe it is that excel though one of the worksheets was a workbook. I had to insert a new worksheet to make it stop thinking I had "multiple objects selected", then I basically copy-pasted and exported all the data to a new workbook. Despite some minor loses on the one worksheet/book I got everything.

Then I move it back to my PC and opened it in 97... only to realize it did NOT want to convert it back to 97 format. "Do you want to save? You could lose info." (*clicks yes*) "saved" (*clicks save*) "Do you want to save? You could lose info."

I had to copy-paste/export the whole thing out AGAIN, to a new workbook, before it would work properly again.

Too bad you didnt have the issue using 2003. In Options > Save
tab there is the path to the AutoRecover location and the interval
of the saves.

I dont have 97 anymore, but maybe it has something similar. If it
does you may be able to recover a version before the corruption.

It stores the changes within the workbook and old saves? I've heard of this but never used it. I backup once every few days (every day when I work at this) anyways.

So this might explain why the file size dropped 3 megabytes (> 75%!!!) when I copied it out.

Is there a way to remove the history from a workbook quickly? Say before a product launch? (especially the ability to turn it off, so the product doesn't grow with time)

Yes, in Tools > Options > Save > uncheck the "Save AutoRecover info every:"

Note: for 2003.

Since this is going to be published, dont forget to remove personal
information from the workbook. Tools > Options Security tab >
Privacy Options: check "Remove Personal information from file
properties on save".

That must be 2003 as well, because there's no security tab under tools/options.

Quick question: What makes 2003 better than 97? (starts googling)
I know that I got mad when I found out I couldn't use RaiseEvent in 97, but it is in 2003. Any other coding specific things? (CONTROL ARRAYS?!)

No control arrays yet
I would say bug fixes and some user features, but they're not
that important to me. i want code improvements. I think the main
feature I like is the ability to use VSTO 2003 with VS .NET 2003 and be
able to program excel dlls! Cool!! Much easier to reteve data from
a datareader and load into an Excel spreadsheet in just a couple
of lines of code. And a couple more lines to be able to make
update directly to the db!!!
