Windows Update 'stops' everything...
Running windows update on Windows XP (you know... the IE page with the activex and all that), and I reach the page which shows that it's 'looking for updates'.
It just stays there, and appears to be stuck, because that window cannot be closed, and even trying to shutdown is impossible. I have to cold boot the laptop every time.
Any guesses? (Any guesses at all will do )

Can you CTRL+ALT+DEL into task manager? Are there any strange group policies enforced on your machine? Have you tried deleting downloaded program files? Are you logged on as an administrator?

Aha, right I had an error with WU before with it telling me I didn't have machine admin rights to use it (when I was logged in a both a local & domain admin). I had to destroy & re-install it then & have just found the link again showing the steps on how to do this:

try it in safe mode. (with networking)
