Invention!
My girlfriend is scared about getting murdered in her sleep (welcome to the city, baby! ) so I was thinking:
I could design a program that had a neat looking interface, and tell when it's running, it'll set off a really loud alarm is someone breaks in.
But I don't think it'll work on her.
What do you think?

Tell her to move to Finland. Much safer here. But if you can't get her to Finland, you gotta make Finland come there: thus code a virtual Finland! I'm sure it'll keep all unnice people out of the apartment.

You can buy green plastic frogs that sit on the ground. When they detect movement, they let off this god-awful croak.
Put one by every door at night. Just don't wake at 4am for a midnight snack run to the fridge.
They don't have three eyes but.

Dude, you are in Canada... There isn't any crime there except speaking French!
At least you don't live here in Chicago. In chicago, if the murder rate drops too low, the government sends out flyers to random citizens informing them that they have to show up to the murder booths. There is a fine for not showing up too!

Get a load of empty coke cans and thread them onto a length of string, hang it on the front door handle on the inside. So when the handlt turns all the cans fall down and make a ****load of noise.
It'll wake the dead at 2.31am

Most people are murdered by people they know
Have you ever thought her fear might actually be that you will murder her in her sleep - in which case you would probably have disabled your software alarm beforehand.
My advice would be to get a new girlfriend - whether or not you kill the existing one first is up to you.

Any self respecting murderer will trip the master circuit breaker in the kitchen (thus rendering any PC neutralised) before proceeding to their mark. Radio silence is normally observed during a Black Bag Job.
Night vision and flashbangs are optional.

ahhh, i have proven that even the smartest criminal is too dumb to think of battery backup. i had a motion detector hooked up to a siren. landlord's son snuck in, and pulled the plug. it kept wailing for 3 minutes. I came in and was told that the alarm went off twice. the second time as he was leaving, the battery set off the siren. I would have never known, except that the neighbors told me that it went off. landlord tried to say that the door vibrated and set off the alarm. his son was busted, though.
i had just started using it again. I don't know how long he was coming in and partying, just that it was his last time. I have moved twice since then, and still haven't bother to turn it on very often, as it is a *very* safe neighborood.
Every once in a while, I'll set off the siren just to let the neighbors know that the place has an alarm. When I leave for long periods, I just *may* flip the switch.
Radio Shack model. Has instant/delayed switch on it, too.
Best $150 I ever sent. Also a extreme (fiire) heat detector.
6 D-Cells last a long time. I change them yearly.
