On Resolving Threads [Resolved]

Just out of curiosity, what would it take to add a check mark that the thread starter can check when their issue is resolved. It could then automatically add **RESOLVED** to the subject line. It could either be on the post starting the thread, or on any post by the thread author.

Just a thought, don't know if it's possible or not.

That's been seggested several times and while it's a great idea, it would take a change to the underlying forum code and we don't do that.

What about using a smilie image for the first posts icon to
designate a resolved thread without having to view the thread
This would allow only the threads starter to change the icon and
would not require a change to the underlying forum code.

I would really like to see something like the sample image below.

What do you think?

I realy like that idea...can't see how much of a hack that would be...not sure tho....looking forward to hear from Brad about this. It might not be possible to add more smilies like that without adding a hack....but hmmmm...maybe it is just as hard to change that smilie as it is to add resolved, you have to edit the post anyway...

Even though it's only marginally easier to go back and add the smilie as compared to editing the Subject, I like the idea. I'm a little concerned that someone who didn't understand the meaning and used it would wonder why they got no responses. I'm going to add a little poll (if I can) to see if people like the idea and if so which icon they would want to use (there should only be one).

Nice. And yeah I was a bit concerned about the new members too. But I don't think it will be that big of a problem. They will understand it fast, and if it is a symbol that has anything with "resolved" to do then I can't see why they would want to add it in the first place...

The forums at www.phpbuilder.com have a "Mark Thread Resolved" option and they're run by JupiterMedia. Why do they get it and we don't?

If there is any reservation about this issue, I think that if you
realize that there are tooltips associated with every smilie, you
will see there will be minimal, if any, confusion. So we would have
a smilie for Resolved and the tooltip could say "Resolved".

I hadn't considered that. That pretty much removes any reservations I have.

I guess all thats left to decide is to go with the green check mark
with the background or green check mark with a clear background.

I think the clear green check mark is the one too. Should I make
into a .gif format?

Also, on another note, I'm sure the other users may agree that
when posting a new thread or a reply, having all those animated
smilies puts a drain on blinking caret. Its a little irritating.

Couldn't we make the smilie menu static for better performance
only on the reply page?

Also, I was thinking but don't know if its possible if we could make
it so when the user creates a new thread the resolved check
mark will not be visible or available. This will help new users from
resolving a new thread.

how about a RESOLVED button next to New Thread and Post Reply that could only be pressed by the thread starter? When the response is satisfactory, he/she could click the button to add the check mark?

I knew what you meant by Smilie menu but didn't get what you meant by make it static, do you mean not animate the animated smilies on it? If so I don't "think" its possible cos it just loads the same files as the similies

I've uploaded the check icon as a message icon. You'll now see it in the message addition screens.

I just checked out the PHP site and you are correct. I'm asking Rich to see if he can pull that code and add it here as well.

i read it, and still think that its a good suggestion. would save the extra step of re-editing the post. you could just click resolve button on the first post as you're reading it.

Word Of Warning: If you create a thread that has a poll on it (like this one) then the icon you select doesn't show up on the forum listing but does when you are reading the thread

Thanks Martin. Its so much easier to see when a thread is resolved.
I dont have to view the thread to see its resolved on the last
post. The only reason I go into a resolved thread now is if the
subject appeals to me and I want to know and learn more about
it or add my two cents.

Where's TG? I havent seen him around lately. I want to see the
results from resolving this thread since its a poll. Will the icon
actually change to the check mark? TG is the only one that can
resolve this thread.

The result was 11 to 0, but can't you see the results by clicking View Results?

I meant the subject icon for a poll is the round thing with the x
in it. Will it change to the check mark? But now I see you changed
it now to the check mark but the round poll icon is still there. Now
that the results I wanted to know.
