Here's a question for everybody. When I was in school, about 90% of my classmates smoked. I want to know if this is consistent with programmers out of school. I started smoking when I was 16 (when I started drinking) and finally quit when I fould out that I was pregnant in May of 99. So, how many of you smoke?

I smoke. If I didn't I don't think I would ever get up and take a break...the computer just draws you in and grabs you. Nicotine fits are the only thing that saves me.

    Red face

No offense barrk (since I don't know you and won't
presume to judge you), but I hate smoking. I have
never tried it and never will.

It stinks that when I go out to the bars that they
are so smokey. We have one bar here that is smoke
free. NY should follow CA's lead and ban smoking in
bars. Because I really think I've developed an
allergin to cigarette smoke, I don't go out to bars
and dance halls as much anymore.

I don't even let people smoke in my house. It leaves
    that not-so-pleasant smell on everything.

Taking a break at work? What's that?

Even when I still smoked, I never smoked in my house. But as for smoking in bars, I think that should still be allowed, because I still smoke when I drink. (And I have the willpower to limit it to just at the bar) I think that bars should look into better ventalation systems though. It does get quite smoky in some bars. We have a bar here that put in a great ventalacion system so that you can barely tell that anyone is smoking.

No offense taken. I live in California where we can't smoke anywhere fun anymore. I realize that we are second-class citizen with no rights. However, I do mind the non-smokers who feel they have the right to a holier than thou attitude.

I do not smoke in my car..out of respect for my kids..I do not smoke in non-smokers houses..out of respect for my non-smoking friends. Smoking does not make me a bad person.

I can see non-smoker's point of view and try not to impose my habit on them...but I don't think they should be able to judge me either!

Barrk, what exactly does that law say in California? I remember hearing something about it, but I didn't pay that much attention.

twenty a day, malboro reds man. One of the things I find, is that when I'm really stuck on a problem, instead of going over and over it on the computer, I walk out of the room, spark up a ***, clear my brain (normally with a shovel) and when I come back it all makes sense.

No smoking in any public indoor establishments....restaurants, bars, theatres, you name it. The only place it is legal to smoke is outdoors or on/in your own property (house, car etc).

    Talking

use to smoke since i was 12
now i hardly ever have one
i guess you could say i never got addicted to them (dont know how but i didn't)

but best times to smoke for me are
when i am depressed, (GAWD smoking is good then)
and after a NICE meal (shish kabobs)

i havent had one in ummmmm maybe 2 months
    i kinda miss it..

althou i think smoking is disgusting, kills your organs and makes you SMELLY
but is all that worth the taste of a good smoke?
if i didn't think so i woudn't smoke at all

    there is my 2 cents
and damn now i want a smoke

I never was...although I almost started on a school trip last year. It occasionally helps calm me down, but I'm not addicted in any way (as in average 2 per year!).

I'm not really bothered about people smoking around me, because I don't care about most things

    Smoking...

I have tried to quit..but it is hard when more than half of your friends smoke. But i have cut my smoking down drastically, i only smoke during the weekends
but if i absolutley have to have one, i smoke only one.

It is kind of discousting, the smell of smoke on your clothes.

That ban on smoking in bars was the most ridiculous law i have seen to date!, i mean that was the whole point of a bar... to go get drunk and to SMOKE.But i have been to clubs and bars that still allow smoking, even though it is against the law.

I don't smoke. Took it up for a while when I was 16 to make smoking other substances easier on the throat. Never really got into it though.

It's nice to do every now and again. I still smoke sometimes when I'm drinking with friends who smoke, but not very often. Maybe one a month or so. I can still feel it in my lungs for about a week afterwards when I do, and I hate that, so I don't do it unless I'm already pretty drunk.

I don't mind smokers, and I think that the no smoking in bars thing is a bit stupid. Perhaps they could have charged bars for a license to allow it or something. I can see that in most public places it's not desirable, but it's easy enough to have a smoking and non-smoking area in a restaurant or bar.

I'm not pro-smoking at all, I mean they don't call them cancer sticks for nothing, but it's a choice people should have.

We had a "pot" plant growing on the windowsill in one of the upper sixth common rooms at school for years - noone noticed!

Until last year when they were told to get rid of it...so they did...they smoked it!

I smoke cigarettes . I wish I didn't . I fully believe in "RECREATIONAL" use of narcotics . The only down fall to drugs are people that lose their selfcontrol . You ruin it for everyone . Drop a "Roll" with your wife and you'll NEVER fight again .

I definetly do not smoke. I have nothing against
smokers and I hope they don't have anything
against me. Smoking will kill you though.

    Health

However, I do mind the non-smokers who feel they have the right to a holier than thou attitude
How about the non-smokers who don't smoke because of the health hazards? Non-smokers don't want to contract terminal lung cancer from passive smoking either. It's a shame that certain people have no respect or consideration for the health of others. Like when you're walking down the street and there's a dirty bastard walking infront of you, belching out smoke like an old locomotive.

    Smoking contributes heavily to cancer.
    It causes heart disease.
    It's an expensive habit.
It discolours your hair and your finger nails.
    It makes your clothes stink.

But hey at least it gives you an excuse to get out of working for ten minutes out of every hour. I prefer to take a **** or go for a walk, myself.

I'm sure that any non-smokers here will agree with me that you can tell when the smokers are coming back from their break 30 seconds before they come through the door. You can smell 'em a mile away.

My uncle died of heart disease through smoking.
His wife died two years later from lung cancer, through smoking.

They had six kids, youngest of which was 5 at the time.

Someone convince me it's worth it.

I see it like this way: Its your life, and you are the only one that may decide what do to with it. If a
smoker want to die young. I say let him. If he wants to smell bad. Let him. If he wants sex. Let him ..

My uncle died of heart disease through smoking.
His wife died two years later from lung cancer, through smoking.

They had six kids, youngest of which was 5 at the time.
I had a grandmother. they smoked alot (like a chain thingy). and they died at a age of 93.
Nobody can surly know what can happend to a specific human if he smokes.

ps. I like to have a break for smoking on my work.

Fine. So, on that same note, if someone wants to keep away from cigarette smoke, let him.

Bit bloody difficult with inconsiderate people blowing it in your face at every turn, though.

Also I didn't say that smoking guarantees you'll die from cancer. However, it HAS been scientifically proven that it doesn't help.

Smoking? - pretty disgusting, on the whole. As a chemist, I can tell you that you are ingesting some pretty ****** stuff (that's the technical term!) Can't understand it myself.

Don't get drugs either. Nice cup of cocoa does me.

On the 'right to smoke' or 'right to anything' issue. One person's 'rights' ALWAYS infringes on somebody else's 'rights'. Loss of a sense of duty?

    Cheers,
