    Opinions on Xenon CPU

    All,

I am looking to rebuild my 6 year old BH6 / 3 year old 850 Celeron / 400 MB SDRAM.

I would like to use this new system to play games like DOOM3 and also run VMWare Workstation with 5 OS:

    - Linux 2.4 firewall OS (FFW)
    - Latest SUSE w/ Apache Web server
    - Win2K w/ MS SQL Server
    - WinXP for Gaming
    - Win98 for testing

I am basically thinking a hot new Xenon w/ 1MB L3 cache would be the best all-around CPU for this config, but I don't have any experience with them.

Would I be better off not spending all the dough on a XENON and maybe put it toward other parts of the PC (like a Geforce 6)? What is a P4 Extreme?

    Thanks!

If you want to play doom3 you need the latest generation of graphics card, it has very high min. specs.

Xenon is a CPU based on the PowerPC coming out next year supposedly. I believe you're regerring to a Xeon

I wouldn't bother with a Xeon, they're not all that great for games. If you want my advice, get yourself a new computer with Intel's latest chipset, the 925x or something like that. Those boards will take up to about a 4GHz CPU, the 3.8GHzs are due out in a month or so. They use PCI Express for the grapihcs port, so you could get the ATI X800 when it comes out for PCI EXpress.

Alternatively, get yourself a modern motherboard with AGP8x, and get a Radeon9800. I am running Doom3 at the moment - and I love it

I wouldn't bother at all at all with the P4 EE - its horrendously overpriced. Just go for a normally priced CPU
