depends on what pirate you got it from

If it was captain jack sparrow then you should be ok

the last time M$ blocked updates was SP1, and it was blocked on a range on CD Keys.. so it all depends where you got your key from

XP has had a firewall since it was released.. unless SP2 brings a new one??

and how can you be asking if there will be a SP3 before 2 even gets released?? SPs are like HUGE bug fixes and feature improvements that get accumulated from bug reports, customer complaints, and MS own findings on issues in the OS, and develop a SP to fix them instead of a ton of little updates. The smaller critical updates are for things that need to be fixed right away due to a virus or something of the sort already exploiting it, or one they know will soon be exploited.

SP1 was blocked from pirated copies, but I remember reading that SP2 would not be because of the major security fixes included. It would be worse to have the pirated copies remain vunerible to attacks that would make legal users vunerible, was the logic I think.

    anyone have problems with SP2?

I have heard that it wreaks havoc on some machine. I can't risk losing everything because of an update. If I read that people here had no problems, then I may be interested in risking it.
Until then, I will play it safe.
    (No, not using pirated copy)

the only thing BAD that they said could really happen is that some apps might stop working...

they also said any apps that stop working, should never have been working in the first place if SP2 breaks them... because they were a security risk, or using a flaw.

I didn't see it in Critical Updates and Service Packs on Saturday, so I thought that they weren't releasing it, yet.

I know there'll be changes to IE's security as well, especially regarding ActiveX controls and they way they work.

As for SP2 working with even pirated copies of WinXP, I think that's just wishful thinking. Security patches already display the "illegal Windows Key" message when you're applying them, and SP2 should be no different.

or if you don't want to download that file in the above post, go into your services and stop automatic updates. Then in regedit or some other registry editing thing, delete the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\LastWaitTimeout\
Then start the automatic updates service again. In about 10 minutes, your computer should be updating...

I installed SP2 yesterday on 4 computers. The fouth, which was my home computer, failed to reboot after the service pack was installed. It freezes at the bootup screen. I fear I will have to reformat the entire PC, as I can't find any information about the problem on the net, and MS has yet to provide any troubleshooting for it.

So just beware before you install it, and back up what is importaint

Ouch. Is the doomed computer a legal copy of WinXP? (Obvious question, but had to ask)

    Look at this URL:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;884130

    http://support.microsoft.com/default...t=windowsxpsp2

It is a list of applications that dont work on SP2. So now tell me that VB6, Kaspersky AV, Norton Antivirus etc should never have been working in the first place...

first of all, where is VB6 on that list? second of all Norton and other popular vendors released updates to work properly with SP2. While applications like NAV are "GOOD" applications, they still were using functionality that other "BAD" applications exploited. SP2 fixes these holes in the system, while still having ways to have the applications work if they are coded properly. I had no problems with any of my apps, including VS6, VS.NET, Norton, etc.. after installing SP2.

nope, but I emailed them. from my laptop.
In Selective Start-Up Mode, uninstalled the device, then the whole software package and drivers, then restarted, then installed updated package and my problems went away, except for NOT being able to send a trouble report to M$. I bet that they don't call me back
CreativeLabs said that Windows must be corrupt, btw.

i guess the computer had a few days to acquire updates, as the machine worked fine when she called TODAY. Had to install more ActiveX controls, but after doing so, EVERYTHING worked as expected.
I guess that SP2 is OK!
