Monitor Ghosting.
Any ides what might cause the images displayed on a monitor to ghost? Is it just going bad? It's not a flat panel lcd. It's a crt or whatever it's called these days.

leaving the same image on the screen will 'ghost' it into the monitor. that problem was common in the days of DOS, but windows screensavers, and auto blanking virtually eliminated it.

All problems can be solved by getting a new computer. (almost all :x )
It isn't practical but it would do the job in any case unless his monitor has a hole in it im sure a new pc would fix it.

No it's not from leaving the same image on the screen for an extended amount of time as there is no image that is burned into the screen. All of the text just seems to smear sidways. I thought that is might be from a magnetic source in the room. I run an ionic breeze to clean the air in my office.

If its smearing sideways I would check for any device within your room ( on the side of the smear ) that is likely to contain a magnet, although usually when magnets interfere with CRT's it distorts the color of the monitor... also, to fix this problem you just have to turn the monitor off for about 5 minutes... oh and remove the magnetic source =)

I think it gets rid of stored electrical energy, not sure exactly. Google knows all though.

The 'degauss' circuit in your monitor sends a burst of energy across the
mask, and hopefully de-magnetizes it. Many modern monitors automatically
degauss when you turn them on. If yours doesn't, you should manually hit
the 'degauss' button once in a while (once a month or so) if things are
starting to get fuzzy or tinged wtih wrong colors. It won't hurt your
monitor to do it occasionally, and may fix the image quality.
because:
... actually had this happen to a monitor once - a regular audio speaker
ended up against the monitor face for a few seconds, and for *months*
afterward, there was a circle in that corner of the face where the color
was too green, surrounded by a field that was too purple.
