    Power Supply

Yesterday, I was putting in the new sound card that my dad bought. But suddenly, after I plugged it in, the power supply started making popping sounds and producing sparks! It was 235 W. Any clues?

235W isn't very much in this day and age, but that shouldn't blow it... perhaps the extra load blew it because it was old or something.

But a new 450W ATX PSU.

It wasn't very loaded... A DVDROM, a 1MB Graphics Card (PCI) and a 6GB HD... But still, apparently adding the sound card (Audigy 2) was too much...

I just remembered that the sparks didn't start flying when I tried to open the PC, but when I inserted the cable into the power supply...

Generic Components as in non-branded components.

    Antec, Enermax make good PSU's

If you are using a generic PSU, i advise you to swap it for a quality unit. A nasty PSU can take out a lot of things with it

I have no clue... I'll have to look later. I think Herolchi (SP?) is also a good brand?
