EU taxation

The EU recently addmitted 10 new countries. yay for them.

Apparently, a lot of these countries have recently cut their corporate taxes in order to increase their attractvieness to outside investment and such. Many have started dressing in shorter skirts too.

I read recently that France and Germany (both with High tax rates) have complained about "tax competition" could only hurt the EU and have started talking about forcing these smaller countries to not do what Ireland did and raise back their tax rates in order to have "fair" taxation.

I had a profound question when I started this but have completly forgotten it. So I'll end lamely with:

A lot of EU ideas are counterproductive and should be addressed forthwith.

CAP agreements for starters.

But yes, it's better to cooperate than to bash each other's head it. It makes a nice change from the traditional European sense of friendly hatred and mistrust.

There will always be poorer countries who will offer lower rates to get companies in. It's a short-sighted policy because as soon as another country decides to offer even lower rates then the companies move. Unless the country has other benefits like cheap educated labour, good infrastructure and close to major markets.

Hmm, I need to read up some more.

but two points. I agree, CAP agreements are backwards, but the idea of "preserving the rural landscapes" is a backward concept, in and of itself, isn't it? It's like setting up historic districs in the Eastern united states and telling home owners that they cannot put an air conditioning in the house.

Second, I disagree that lowering taxes is a short-sighted concept... unless reduced spending is not also accompanied... much like the current US dude is doing.

Over the past five years EU rulling have been directly connected to over 12,000 SME's being forsed out of business while large companies set-up standing orders to pay the fines and continue as normal...

The EU is a corrupt monolithic attempt at creating a superstate that can compete directly with America.

Nothing more, nothing less.

I, for one, think that it's total b**locks and the UK should exit left as soon as it can.

...and the tories have CERTAINLY provided us with wonderful alternatives over the years. William Hague, Ian Duncan Smith, world meeters and greaters the lot of them....

I just wished the UK stopped moaning and dragging its feet and decided what it wants. You're either in or out with no in-between.

Oh come on, it's hardly just Britain that winges about the EU, is it? I mean, we're not the only European country to opt out of the single currency, are we? We're hardly the only country in the EU who have a proportion of the population opposed to membership, are we?

Oh, and to get back to the topic, I'm glad that Blair at least managed to retain our veto regarding tax harmonisation...that would be a disaster. Competition between nation states on tax levels is the only thing stopping taxes rocketing to even higher levels than they are at the moment.
