Symptoms of dead HD ??[RIP my 40Gb HD]

I think I've this case

BIOS doesn't detect it, can't hear a humming noise, noise it extreamly loud, Windows keeps saying it's full (not sure), data gets corrupt all the time etc.

knocking sound when powered up, or the drive doesnt vibrate,

if passed these tests make sure pin is set to master or slave even try cable select

change IDE cable, if still isnt seen in BIOS, check with anopther hard drive, if that is seen fine, then you can safely say HD is no good

are u saying its not seen in the bios?, check master/slave/cable select settings need to see it there, av u 1 hard disk or 2?

the disk may have sector errors may need to format and scan disk so operating system doesnt use again

vibrates sometimes ? if it powers up you should be able to feel it if you cant drive is on its way out, what drive and what size

I'm sure it's correctly configured .?? take it out and check, with IT never assume anything? if with another device on the same IDE then both maybe the same

I've two HD . The dead one is the slave . I had them together for about a year . It's been working for the entire time . It was working until I got up in the morning and found the pc off . I turned it on , kept trying till I realized it might have a dead body there .

Both Western Digital , Master :120GB , Slave : 40GB .

oh dear, ive had that too

take it the pins are master on one and slave on the other, it detects your master but not your slave, have a look at the make and model check the website, see if it still warrentied, if so cost ya postage and get a new one, if too old put in the bin, if it had loads of unsaved work you needed, would probably cosy ya in excess of £500 to these data retrival companys

what i do now is have two 40GB drives master and slave

1st 40GB 10gb Boot partition 30Gb data
2nd 40Gb backup of Boot partition, and copy of 30GB data

that way if either drive goes you can still recover

other ways include tape backups or even raid

It's ok . the bin always say 'welcome' . I will try to buy new cable and keep trying the whole night .

if the drives knackered your wasting your time, however, just as a final test, take both drives out, put both as master see if you 120GB is found, turn PC off replace with 40GB see if this is found as master(change pins) is that is not seen, just change to cable select, failing that drive is buggered

and no matter what you do, its not gonna repair itself

yeah, bin it sounds, however there is light,

if its 40GB sure that will still be under warrenty so you could send it back get a new one

I don't know if I already said that right after this problem , I found the HD is so hot . So do you think it's a hardware damage and still be under warrenty ???

allow to cool down, then see if it works, think your best to just try get off the disk any files you need if you have any luck then check the manufacturers web site to see if warrentied

take it was workingsometime and not others, i have had a drive like that resen

It's an old thread , I threw my hd in the bin couple of months ago , ofcourse after hitting it to the wall 10 times .

It's not my fault . The thread was lying in peace deep in this forum , then the guy dug it out ! I'll mark it [RIP my 40Gb HD] though .
