    Request To The Mods

Hi Mr Moderators, i know we have the

ASP, VB Script, Internet and Network Development

forum but, i feel we need a winsock forum, would this be possible? i feel it would greatly benifit our community!

wouldn't it make more sense if it was to create a Internet Programming section, instead of focusing on just winsock?
I suppose the title "Internet Programming" suggests webbased programs but you know what I mean

Yea by the sounds of it you did missunderstand me . I was saying it would be better to have a section for all kinds of client side internet development rather than restrict it to Winsock. Mind wouldn't the "ASP, VB Script, Internet and Network Development" section already cover this? If it does then you would be better posting you guestions there as you will get more attention in a more busy section.
As plenderj said its down to damand, is the "ASP, VB Script, Internet and Network Development" section flooded with winsock questions? if not then there wouldn't be much benifit for you by seperating them .

(The way I see it anyway)

yea well the asp and vbscript forum could reamin, then we could have an application development so such things as winsock and directplay,

i feel that many users in this forum have to go elsewhere to ask about winsock, and it can be a brillant and interesting part of programming

I'm confused. What specifically are you guys asking for. I see a few different suggestions.

Personally, I think a "Client/Server Programming" forum would be cool, but do you want to limit it to just VB (in the VB category), or open it up to various languages (and place it in the general category)?

I think the second method would be best. Then people could just specify the language in the topic, ie:

    VB: Problem Connecting with Winsock
    VC++: Socket problems

I think it would help the admins decide if you guys came to a consensus on what you're asking for.
My evil laugh has a squeak in it.

well basicly the forum we have at the moment i feel is two 'open' so yes a client/server development forum is a great idea, hmm.. i'm just thinking what do people think on the aspect of it being just VB or all languages?

    thanks for your reply

I would like one for all languages....and I think it is ashame anyway that in the threads in general sections don't have the prefix C++/VB and so on....makes it very confusing. Even in the game section....

You do know the prefixing is already used in some section of this forum already . Just not all the users read the "Readme Posts" .

This thread makes a number of suggestions and comments, so I'm not sure what is being asked.

If the question is, will I create a WinSock forum, the answer is no. It is too specific and too nitchy. If it is to create some other forum, then the question is -- what topic/title for the forum and how would it (clearly) differ from existing forums.

As a side note, "Client/Server" is a dated term. "Distributed Computing" is a better term to use as is "n-tier" or "Multi-tier". Client/Server is generally considered 2 tiered and doesn't clearly address the middle tiers that are often used.

    Brad!

well initially it was winsock, but i ahve come to agree that is a poor idea, for the reasons mentioned, basicly a forum for client/server developent, Distributed Computing, would be the one i am asking about,

title - Distributed Computing (server/client development)

it would differ because firstly it will be the only place people can begin/continue to learn about winsock and other such areas which are used in network/game/business applications

i feel this could be a great benifit to the forum members because the forum we have at the moment for Distributed Computing is also mixed in with asp, and such scripts,

what are your thoughts on that proposel?

    thanks

    Brad,
I mostly visit and answer questions in "ASP,VBScript, Internet & Network Development" forum, but i have noticed in the past few years that there is very few netwrorking questions. Its mainly ASP & some VBScript related questions.

So one option could be to separate ASP forum and have another forum for "N-Tier"/"Distributed" or whatever else appropriate. This would not be any language specific rather a Networking Related Programming forum which could cater for few other topis already discussed here.

    What do you guys think?

    Just an idea..

I am not into games programming that much, so not sure whether it would fall under Games Programming or Network Development category. I guess its up to the poster to post in the forum they think will be most appropriate depending on the nature of the question.

thats what i'm trying to get at dan, the asp and scripts should have its own area and then distrubuted programing could have its own area

i would like to include direct play, but that may not be possible as it entwines with the games programmin forum

Well DPlay has came up once or twice in the Games Section but problem is its not always answered because not many of the people in there alot have used it, myself included. I plan use it at some point but I'll need a good game to use it on first . Mind people who would use the Distrubuted Programming may too not have used DPlay to do networking stuff .

BTW have you edited the comment on the "ASP & VB Script" section now? I can't remember what it used to say but how it stands at the moment it sounds like its still catering for the winsock stuff .

I was thinking the same thing. The current description mentions something about ActiveX, but isn't there a seperate forum for "Com & ActiveX"?.

Also the Category of the new fourm is listed under "Visual Basic". But wouldn't mind if its left there, as it will get noticed more as opposed to listing it somewhere at the bottom.

Nothing urgent, just though i will point out.
