DSL Questions
DSL just got availible in my neighborhood about a week ago and I am going to call Verizon up and ask some question's. Do you guy's recremend any questions that I should ask the person?
So far I know that I will be getting dsl on my gateway and running it wireless to 2 computers.
Questions so far:
Whats my connection speed going to be, since isn't it length sensitive?
Why can't I run wireless from my Gateway that has Windows 98?
Do you have any deals going right now?
Anymore would be greatly appreciated.

They won't support the wireless network, that is usually not something they want to do.
The only thing you need, EXTERNAL modem. After that, everything is pretty easy if you follow your wireless routers manual.

Yeah what is the transfer rate for DSL? I thought it was double the rate of a dial up connection. I heard that cable is far better in terms of reliability and speed.

How can you make a blanket statement like this?
DSL is great if the phone company doesn't overload customer connections to the CO (central office) without increasing bandwidth to the regional connection.
CABLE is great if the cable company ran enough "real wire" to each local area so that the bandwidth being shared by all the customers doesn't tank.
We have DSL at our office - and from a reseller, not the phone company. That's because we have static IP's, exchange server - we needed technical support above what the phone company could muster.
We tried CABLE at home, but the idiot cable tech couldn't get a stable connection - blamed it on the number of TV's in the house - splitters - he was just dumb. We then ended up with DSL from the phone company at home.
Both home and office are within 2000 feet of the CO.

Since cable isn't under the same regulation restrictions as the phone lines, technically, it is faster.... UNTIL.... everyone in the neighboorhood comes home and all log on at the same time and start surfing the web (or downloading napster or their favorite pron). As the bandwidth usage goes up, your performance may degrade, BUT it takes ALOT of people all on at the same time, doing intense things at the same time. Doesn't happen often, so for the most part cable tends to be faster.
edit: Oh, and cable doesn't have the same distance limitastion that DSL does.

TG - I could really care less about a debate like this - but I just found this on the web. Blanket statements stink...

Compare DSL Versus Cable Speed
The most common question we get is which service is faster? The answer in the short-term: Both services provide just about the same Internet speed; about 50x the average speed of a 28.8K Modem. In the long run, DSL will be the faster, superior technology.
With a cable Internet connection, you must share your bandwidth with your neighborhood. In other words, the more people who use cable Internet access the slower it gets.
With a DSL connection, there is no bandwidth sharing. If you sign up for DSL service with Verizon for example, you will get a dedicated(Solo, constant) connection straight from Verizon. DSL speeds remain high, no matter who gets a DSL connection in your neighborhood.
Internet availability and how to connect
In General - Cable is more available then DSL because DSL is a new service, and DSL is only available in certain states. The DSL roll-out to every state may take years.
In order to get a Cable connection, you must have a cable modem connected to a cable wire - the same type of cable wire that connects to the back of your TV. With DSL, you need a DSL modem and you can connect to the Internet from any live phone jack from your house. Both Cable and DSL modems are included free in any of our deals.

Where i live they are advertising Cable to be 3x faster than DSL and 50x faster than Dialup. it would be illegal for them to advertise that if it wasnt true.
the DSL in my area is called SBC/Yahoo DSL, who wants Yahoo integrated with their ISP?

Is everything an ilution over there....here in Norway if you have a 1Mbit ADSL connection, then it is 1Mbit +/- 2-3Kbit. If a kable is 1Mbit it is exactly the same...

Yea but this cable co. dosent offer anything less than 3mbit, its the default speed.
Download speeds compared to 56Kbps dial-up and 768Kbps DSL. Maximum download speed: 3.0Mbps. Maximum upload speed: 256Kbps.

You must be kidding right? The advert for speed is a max speed brag - you share the line regardless.
Try this site to measure your "real" speed:
http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html
There are quite a few that will do this...
Do either of you understand how you share the bandwidth with others using the service? No illusion - simple reality - they are trying to make money with the least expense. Do you think either the cable co or the phone co are going to "overload" the connection with extra bandwidth??

And your point is???
If you have 100Mbit ADSL and 100Mbit cable and both the companies can guaranty the speed, then it is still the same speed....no need to compare it to modems or ISDN....

Most cable/ADSL companies here in Norway guaranty for the speed. The bandwith for the companies is always much bigger then they have to. No cheating with max speeds and so on. Like my company has the power at the moment to give all users that have 1Mbit lines 4Mbit max speed, and so on. But in stead they give you 1Mbit guarany for your money. They often test it during weekends ans so on, and open all "doors" so everyone can have a much higer max speed, just to check that there is enough bandwith for all...;=

Who cares about bandwith sharing,
i'm sharing bandwith to p2p users..
My point is why get DSL when you can get cable, if you have DSL you need 2 phone lines right? with cable you dont even 1 phone line, they can send phone, TV, and internet through 1 cable line, and you and
you dont need to get offline.

Errrr...you are talking about ISDN....for DSL you don't need to have a phone line. Some companies require you to have one. But I don't have a phone here at all, and it still work, and I only pay a montly fee.....

I thought a DSL modem plugs into a regular phone jack.

Yes but you don't have to pay for that phone line. And you don't need a phone at all. Just the plug in the wall.
And even if you have a phone most companies can ofer you ADSL or SDSL and a phone on the same line. Don't need two lines.

I pay $49 a month for it. A 1Mbit line that is. And remember that I live in the second most expensive capital in the whole world...
