Do any commercial sites use Javascript?

Do any commercial sites use Javascript?
other than for banner ads (like this forum)
and insist that you have javascript enabled?

I also notice that frames seem to be going out of fashion as well.

I've noticed ALOT of websites NOT using javascript lately.
amazon has no javascript at all.
but at the same time I see other sites that embrace java,flash, and other "high end" technologies.

I think it's cool.

There are still many large commercial sites that uses javascript, such as microsoft.com and macromedia.com. But I agree with PNJ, the introduction of Macromedia Flash and Macromedia Director and other similar Software the future of JavaScript looks very uncertain.

I know what flash does, but what is Director for?

you can't use flash for alot of things though.
Like clientside form validation and other simalar things.
but as far as animation goes, flash is easier to use than javascripting so I think you will see more people using flash for that than javascript.

I think with javascript you can reach more people becouse you don't need a plugin, but who wants to code for days and days when you can use flash or a simalar product and get the same results in a few hours? time is money. sounds stupid but it's true.

I belive Director is used for simalar things like Flash but I belive it is a higher end product.
meaning it cost more, is harder to use, ect....

Director is similar to Flash in some areas, but its more comprehensive then flash. While flash is mainly used to create web contents, Director is mainly used to create Multimedia project for CD-ROM and creating interface for CDROM.

Like flash it can be used in web aswell, it supports very complex animation. It has its own scripting language called Lingo and it can do some cool stuff like reading and writing to files, excute files etc.

You can actually do Client Side Validatiion with flash(FS Script), i have done it, i can send u an example if u want.
About the plugin, now most major browser like IE5 and NS5 already comes with Shokcwave plugin so in few days people wont need to download the plugins anymore.

Anyway you guys probably thing i work for Macromedia!!! I wish !!. I just cant help liking the Macromedia products, Flash, Director, Dreamweaver/Ultradev and Fireworks.

I didn't know you could do client side validation w/ flash, that's cool.
your right about most browsers having the plugin for flash but depending on who your designing for sometimes it doesn't matter.
I just worked on a site that the client wanted EVERYBODY to be able to view the site and we used ALOT of DHTML and had a few flash things in it. You wouldn't belive how many people didn't have the player and didn't want to download it. plus, many of those 'chumps' have the slowest connection speed in the world so even if they did have the plugin, it would take too long to download.

oh well, I guess all I am trying to say is depending on who you are designing for you really depends on what you should use.

that is why foodtv.com and amazon.com(and probably many others) don't have any javascript or multimedia, that way as many people as possible can access the site.

I know it sounds strange but there are ALOT of people that don't know what a plug in is or why they should download a new browser.
I know this becouse I have worked w/ many of then
