What you hate from some Web Sites
So... I am working on a proyect for school. It is going to be about common errors (design errors, usability errors, security errors, programming errors) you find on some web sites.
So I want to ask the people around here about something that they have notice on web sites that doesnt work well or that it is upseting to the user.
You dont have to trash talk, well you can if you want to!!, but point at one or many problems and if you want at a posible solution(s).
I apprciate your help!!

- Popups
- Ads and banners
- Unreadable fonts or colors
- Pages that are not cross-browser compatible (I'm using Firefox)

* Poor navigation on a site.
* Pages going overboard with graphics
* Entire site in a flash, taking ages to load.
* Too many colors. It's not appealing, it's irritating.
* <marquee>
* <blink>
* Pink.

The thing I hate most are pages that don't allow you to back out via the Back button. That and color schemes that are nearly unreadable on my PC.

I don't understand that either. They are just sad wannabe geeks who have just realised what they can use the User-Agent string for.
Next we'll see the message:

You know what I say to Internet users who come to my site and complain that it was designed for IE only....!@#$ off. It is my site and I can do what I want. I don't care if you use Firefox, no one makes you. No one is making you come to my site either. If Firefox was soooo great, then it would have some IE compatibility built in so you wouldn't have problems on sites that were geared toward IE browsers.

Sorry. I just hate the argument that every site should be built thinking of every browser. I do think that if you are a business, and you want to appeal to the widest audience, then you will cater, but it is still a business decision.
I know I have offended the ANTI IE crowd, but I needed to get that off my chest. Now I can get back to coding my IE only site...lol.

After some thought, I am going to be adding a feature to my site (since I have to redo everything anyway) that checks if you are using IE. If not, then I will put some kind of nagging message on the top of the page. It will be fun and inspire some good conversations...lol.

XHTML is stricter than HTML, so you have to stick to the rules if you want to use it. Therefore, pages in XHTML are better written than those in HTML, and that's why they are usually cross-browser compatible. So XHTML does not guarantee compatibility, but it's more common for sure.
Anyway, XHTML is the future mark-up language for websites, so you should use it.

Yeah but XHTML is all with lowercase tags, I can't stand that, I always use Uppercase tag names. Converting my site would take me absolutly ages pluss I preffer uppercase.
To be honest I think the next version of browsers should just cut out all the rubish they have supported that isn't in the standards. Like IE's events that only it has. This way there will be a rush of sites that suddenly become incompatible but it will force people to create their sites compatible to the standards (and as a result all browsers).
I try to keep my site compatible but I wouldn't be surprised if its not totally . e.g. I use the <BR /> tags which I shouldn't because I declare it as:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">

PHP + Regular Expressions == Convert your entire site in 30 seconds.
I think its important to follow standards becuase not only does it ensure your site reaches the widest audience it also makes it easier for blind people and those with disabilities to view your site accurately.
I've heard of lawsuits against companies who only make offers available on-line and only let those people with Javascript or who are using IE take advantage of these offers - meaning that people with sight problems cannot use the site. That I blieve is quite a serious offence under the disability descrimination act.
If you can get your site to work in browsers such as Lynx and Links then you'll probably be fine.

Check if it's IE, if it isn't... just display the source... say that you were still allowing them to access the contest... they just had to be able to read HTML .
Don't pay attention to this signature, it's contradictory.
