To the US service men and women past and present.

    And to their families.

Thank you for your sacrifices and for being there when we need you.

What did you need them for? Do you live in Iraq?

In reference to all those that aided in the D Day landings.

D-Day and all the other deaths from that war and other wars. It's a high price to pay, but usually it's worth paying (IMHO).

Today, twenty-seven war cemeteries hold the remains of over 110,000 dead from both sides: 77,866 German, 9386 American, 17,769 British, 5002 Canadian and 650 Poles.

Really now, is it worth paying? What for? Do you think people even learnt lessons from so many deaths? Have we been able to avoid more wars and conflicts since then?

The English paid for the American help at D-Day ( as well as most of WWII) we only finished off paying our financial debt a couple of years ago.

The Americans were hired help: no moral stance - just paid for the job.

Whatever political reasons there were between the countries is irrelevant. The bottom line is that many people gave up their lives for what they believed to be right.

As for HB's question, was it worth it?

Yes. In my view it was worth it. Whilst the threat of invasion had somewhat vanished after the battle of Britian and with the collapse of the German eastern front in Russia, We would have been left with a powerful super-state in Europe that was founded on principles that today we find abhorrent (such as oppression, hatred etc.). It would only have been a matter of time before they expanded again into other countries, and eventually to Hitlers implied goal of world domination. Once such a government was in power around the world it would have been too late to unseat it.

So, we'd all be wandering around speaking German and saluting the Swastike. I'd have been fine of course being tall, fairly blonde and blue eyed, but how do you think you would fair in Hitlers vision HoneyBee?

So whilst the reasons for governments getting involved in the fight might have been political, the reasons for individuals joining in was personal.
