Thread: What to buy?

    Hey. I am just starting to learn C++ and am not sure which version to buy. I don't have big pockets, and noticed MS Visual C++ Standard is far cheaper than professional. Some help?

    You don't need to buy one at all. Borland have their compiler up for download free.

    There's also the GNU C++ compiler, DJGPP (with RHIDE development environment).

    But on Visual C++...Professional just comes with extra bits that you don't need unless you really want them. Standard is fine for learning. (waitaminit - is there a learning edition?)

    ok, thanks, where do I get the borland compiler. I guess I'll go get standard of the visual, only 50 dollars

    I prefer borland Turbo C++ 3.0 rather than BC5(freecommandlinetools.exe)

    TC3 has an IDE like RHIDE for DJGPP... they are very similar

    You can buy Game Programmer's Starter Kit 3.0 for around $50 US, and it's shipped with 3 e-books on C++ and Intro edition of C++. As a bonus, DirectXSDK, Genesis 3D Enigne and a Games Sages book are also added.
