Do you want to use point sprites (particles suggest it)?
What version of DX?

I'm using DX9, but i think this'll work for DX8...
It's a very simple demonstration of using point sprites (make sure your 3D card supports them).
If you need help (or it doesn't work) i'll be happy to answer any questions.

These things has changed a lot the latest yeas....shaders make you have much more controll of all the lighning and the effects.
Here is an example. If you have a DX9 compatible card you should just more right over. A lot of the setup (as you have done) is more or less the same, just change all the 8 to 9 and there is an ocational NULL parameter added....look here is an example using shaders.

It was a friend of my at an other forum that made it...he only knew him for some months, becuase he was head hunted to the 3D department at ATI. He has his own web site too (he is from Sweden), with a lot of nice samples in both OGL and DX.
