    DirectX vs GDI

    I was wondering . . .

Is GDI on the way out? Should all new graphics components be rendered using DirectX?

I am not sure if GDI is on it's way out...but if I should guess, I would say now. DX requres HW acceleration, and needs DX installed. I havn't used GDI, but I guess that it's doesn't need that, so it will always be a need for GDI, at least untill Longhorn is out, then I am not sure anymore...

My requirements make for a little more fun as well; the graphics stuff I will be doing will be 2d/3d and run from a terminal server

Ad long as the PCs have the HW for it, DX will always be faster. But also a bit harder to code. It is for work, or for fun?

This might be a good thign to check out, Its a post I made a week or to ago about what Longhorn will use instead of GDI and GDI+. Its a markup kinda thing. The thread didn't get any replies but the link I put in the post is a good read:

I read about that. Is there anyway a normal (ie non-beta) developer can get a preview of this?

Not sure, I thought I had seen a link to download a SDK somewhere but signing up for a BETA tester is easy isn't it (if you find a link pass it on cos I've never got roudn to signing up as a BETA yet ).
