    Can it be?

Turned to the news the other night
Somethin I didn't expect to see
    Soldiers behavin badly
    Can it be

In the shadows of Iraqi prisons
    Captives tortured shamefully
    Laughter by their captors
    Can it be

Can it be, can it be
Can it be, O can it be
    Americans behavin badly
    Can it be

And as the world watches on
Enemy's handed a gift for free
    Trade in pride for sorrow
    Can it be

    And this board's great debators
have yet to address this tragedy
    There must be an answer
    Can it be

Can it be, can it be
Can it be, O can it be
    There must be an answer
    Can it be

how can it be? Ask a psychologist named Zimbardo....he conducted an experiment in the 70's in California....it was about the realtionships between prisoners and their captors. Students volunteered. The group was split in two. Half were "the guards" and the other half were "prisoners". The experiment was to observe their respective behviours over two - three weeks. It was terminated on the third day. The "guards" were physically abusing the "prisoners" (some of whom were their friends) It was quite revealing with regards to human behaviour. NOW DON'T GET ME WRONG - this does not by any means excuse the behaviour, but was I surprised when hearing about the american soldiers' abusive measures? No, they are after all, human like anyone else. (not to mention they have been trained to the xtreme to be killing machines)

I've studied about this experiment, and it did give very interesting insight into our own nature.

They've set up a site for the same experiment here:

    http://www.prisonexp.org/

    It's a good read.
