pirating linux
ok i have a question aobut the GNU, license
say i obtained a copy of redhat linux by downloading it from
the site, and i decide to re-destribute it by charging a feee
for the meduim and another fee for myself (i dont provide
warranty) for example if the medium costs me 5$, if i
re-destribute the final redhat copy at a price of 10$ would i
be violating the GNU public license, and in effect pirating
linux?

Yes....you can only charge for the media...you can not make any profit off of it. But who would know if you did violate is the real queston. And if you dont make too much money they wont even bother with you

Even for the second $5 you could say that it is to pay your internet-connection, the cost of the CD (DVD) burner, your time. So if you don't sell 1000's of copys you could do this legal.

Does the GPL allow me to sell copies of the program for money?
Yes, the GPL allows everyone to do this. The right to sell copies is part of the definition of free software. Except in one special situation, there is no limit on what price you can charge. (The one exception is the required written offer to provide source code that must accompany binary-only release.)
thats taken from the FAQ, now its not very clear, are they talking about the orignal auther or the re-desitributer?

Everything that comes with Red Hat is not necessarily GPL.

Well regardless if you are breaking the law...I will but a copy of Redhat 9 from you....every Iso I burn I have an error. And I already did the checksum. So i am pretty sure that my CD's are crap.
