What the hell? THREE minute silence?
It appears that the all powerful leaders of the UN deemed it fair to hold a 3 minute silence at 11:00 this morning to pay respects to the awful Madrid disaster.
Mathematically speaking, why does Europe think several dozen of its citizens (I'm not sure of the exact number) warrant a longer silence than the 2 minutes that the World Trade Centre where thousands of people died.
This is obviously a political statement, where did they get 3 minutes from otherwise? I don't mean to be insensitive to those who were callously murdered in Spain, they certainly deserve 3 minutes of anyones time, but it sems to me like they (the politicians) just want to get one over on the rest of the world.
Silences like these are just rewarding the terrorists, and gives them a reason to aim for lerger scale targets in the future. There is no excuse for competing like this. 2 minutes is fine.
Imagine Osama talking to his chums around a horse-turd fire...
"Hmm how many minutes should we go for next time guys?"
I find it disgusting, personally. And its not even as if they bothered to tell anyone it was going to be 3 minutes anyway.
Badly thought out, irresponsible and pointless - standard European policy then!
I don't live here any more.

I think terrorists may be a bit more calculating in their actions than that.
The Socialist Party won a shock poll victory after voters appeared to turn on the government over its handling of the Madrid bombings.
This in turn lead to:
Socialist Party prime minister-elect has declared his intention to pull Spanish troops out of Iraq.
Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said: "The war in Iraq was a disaster, the occupation of Iraq is a disaster."
there is a method to their madness

It was the Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern that suggested the 3 minutes. I don't think he put a lot of thought into it - it was more off the top of the top of his head

I agree, I dont think it was supposed to mean anything, other than a mark of respect.

Socialist Party prime minister-elect has declared his intention to pull Spanish troops out of Iraq.
Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said: "The war in Iraq was a disaster, the occupation of Iraq is a disaster."
He does have a responsibility to the people of his country, but pulling out his troops and slandering the war in Iraq as a disaster, seems to me, to be some feeble attempt at appeasing the individuals or groups that did the bombing in the first place.
What country in their right mind would back down after a terroristic bombing?
He can say and do as he pleases, but I think he is setting a bad example for the rest of the world.

The previous Prime Minister went against the wishes of the population - so he's merely appeasing both himself and the general public.

Do what exactly???
Back down from terrorism?
Sit idly by while other countries are attacked and innocent people die?
There is a thing called compassion and a sense of humanity and any countries government that would allow such things to happen without taking action should seriously consider restructuring their government.
This isn't a country vs. country or religion vs. religion issue, this is about allowing innocent people to die without doing anything about it.

I'll take it one step further.
This is about humans allowing other humans to be killed, without doing anything to stop it.
The main problem is most people, governments, etc.. only think in the area of their own little world. What doesn't affect them directly isn't a problem that needs to be addressed.
If americans are being killed, then it's the americans problem.
If it's muslims being killed, then it's the muslims problem.
That attitude is a bunch of ****. It's a problem with HUMANITY and it's willingness to sit by while others die.

It's also the attitude of a nation of people that have been scared out of their wits due to years of facism under Franco, and terrorism under Basque Separaist groups over the last half century.
Just because they pull their troops out of Iraq does not mean they are capitulating - The US and UK solution, the war solution, is not the only solution, as Ghandi proved.
This "War on Terror" in it's present format isn't going particularly well, is it?

Everyone dies, why should we be held responsible for the deaths of people we have never met or never will meet?
