A war is only just if it is fought for a reason that is justified, and that carries sufficient moral weight.
what a load of crap, war is immoral.

Yeah, indeed; and they're more or less naming every possible reason to go to war, "...whether they are or not depends on how severe a particular case is...".
E.g. America's attack on Iraq could be justified through the Human rights violations cause, but Iraq's defence is just through the invasion cause.

There is no religion that supports war or killing, yet more killing has been done in the name of religion than for any other reason.

The problem arises out of the fact that, many a time, we tend to fall into the comfort zone of accepting and, in fact, promoting the idea of "the end justifies the means", with a sweepingly broad and loose definition and vaidity of "the end"; "Democracy", "Peace", "Love", "Good", "Motherhood", "Apple Pie", etc. That leads to an attitude of "Sacrifice".
On a related note I have never understood the significance nor the validity of that word. If I give something I value in order to receive something of more value, its called a "sacrifice", is it not? But is not that a "bloody good bargain!"? On the other hand, it is sometimes used to denote the act of giving something of value in order to receive something of lesser value, in which case, I'd label such a person a "loser" for he has made a loss making deal.
War as an end in itself has almost been eradicated from Terra Firma. It took a long time, no doubt. But we have done it. Here's to hoping that War as a means will meet the same fate, sooner rather than later.

War as a means to Peace - anyone with some common sense can see how flawed this is. And as for sacrifice, I don't think you have gained anything by sacrificing someone else for your own ends, especially when those ends will be quite short of people to sacrifice sooner or later. The only way you can gain something is sacrificing yourself, see the people filled with prejudices, greed and hatered for each other, begin to understand how meaningless their struggle is when there is something much more important to them.

If you kill everyone who might oppose you then there will be no more war.
Who's for fun with nukes, then?

One could argue that waging war counteracts one's own shortcomings because
(i) Lack of defence spending: 'they may be a threat'
(ii) Lack of understanding: 'I don't understand them or believe in their beliefs, so they must be dangerous'
(iii) Lack of votes: 'Winning a war will make me popular'
(iv) Lack of good economic sense: 'The increase in arms trades will benefit my country'
Perhaps a little cynical
