    Ups

I have a weird problem with my UPS... When I leave the computer, I sometimes close the screen. When I reopen it, only sometimes I see the UPS beeping like the power got cut and the computer restarts. Any ideas as to why this happens?

    Thanks

By closing your screen I'm assuming you mean you are turning the monitor off.

Most modern UPS devices will correct for power falloff / overload conditions. So, when you first turn your monitor on there is an inrush of current that gets drawn suddenly from the UPS and it tries to correct for it. If the computer is resetting then your UPS size might be too small for what you have plugged into it or it could be time to replace your battery. Smaller consumer UPS(es) don't have bypass modes which will allow connected devices to run off of wall current if something happens to the UPS. So that means if the battery is bad (or the VA is too small) it simply can't supply enough power.

Most likely you are using a smaller UPS on your computer (probably somewhere in the 280-350 range?) so issues like this are pretty common. If it is an APC UPS, then there should be a switch on the back to set the sensitivity for power correction.

You will also notice it beep if you turn on a large draw item in your house that's on the same circuit as the UPS ie. laser printers are notorous for causing a UPS to trip (btw, never plug a laser printer into a UPS).

    Hope that helps

Along those lines, if the UPS is a few years old, the internal battery could be failing. The large draw would bring in the battery backup, but with a bad battery, it would interupt the power, causing the re-boot.

Oh, and the UPS is barely a year old... Is the battery life this short or it shouldn't be a battery problem?

    Thanks for the replies

The normal battery life on APC's is 3 years. And there's a selector here to make sure that you've got the correct size:

If you have the monitor into the UPS...don't

If you lose your monitor suddenly it's better than losing the machine
