Setting up an ISP [SOLVED]

Hi there,

May be this topic is not related to this forum, but you people may have information about this, thats why I am asking. For my Data Communications course, I am required to write a term paper on "Setting up an ISP" in which I have to mention major steps to be taken in setting up an ISP. I have search a lot on the internet but unable to get general information about how can I setup an ISP, what are the steps to be taken in this regard.

Would you please help me by giving some information about the topic or some useful web links.

Not sure if it matters, but there is a difference between Broadband ISP's and Dial Up ISP's. If it is just an ISP in general and you dont have to be specific, it's really not that hard.

You need to secure a backbone connection.
You need Equipment (see above for dif types).
You need to secure Subscribers to your service, do you need to mention Advertising and Marketing plans?
You need to bill your Subscribers.
You need Staff to handle problems.

How in depth do you need to be? I'm sure you can do some web research with the info above.

It just so happens a tutor at college once told us how to become an ISP. Here's what he said:

1. Buy a piece of equipment from cisco called an LS3 (i think ??) which will enable you to establish a 3gb link to your local exchange. It also has 30 primary rate isdn line ports.
2. Rent a 3gb link and 30 primary rate isdn lines.
3. Plug it all in and get yourself a phone number.

Each primary rate isdn line will allow 30 users to connect to you with 56kbps modems.

Thats some serious expense your talking there. Not just the hardware, but also the expense of an OC3 or greater connection, along with the cost to run any fiber lines (if needed.)

30 Primary x 30 Users Per x $21.95/Month = $19,755.

Isn't the bandwidth going to cost more than that? If not, maybe you can make some cash.

We've all used dial up ISP's before. The tatctics they use are quite simple.

One of those cisco things allows 900 dial-up users to connect at any one time. As this would be quite a rare occurence they allow 2000 people to register. The more users they register the less reliable their service becomes. But that's how they make their money.
