Can't reset browsers home page!
Some **** reset my home page to point to somthing else. I found the .html that the url points to and i deleted it but now when i start up IE a dialog pops up saying cant find .html file. It would be no big deal if i could just reset the home page to point to somthing else but everytime i go to tools -> options -> general tab to change the url the changes don't seem to stay. What gives?

It's probably spyware....so get Spy Bot search and destroy...reamove all modules, and then run the special tool for fixing problems like that for IE...

What is the homepage set to? Some homepages are specific, and require a different method to eliminate them. I remember MadBoy had a similar problem a few days ago.

Yeah i certainly did, was a pain to remove. Had to download a fix of some sort, and browse endlessly through the registry. Search back a week or so, find my thread, might help

C:\WINDOWS\secure.html
I scaned my system using Lavasofts Ad-aware 6.0 and nothing was found in the registry.

If you are using W2K or Windows XP, look in the local policy for ther home page setting, it may be set there, or you could change it to something else there, and then undo it and it should allow you to regain control over it. To do it, goto Start->Run and type in gpedit.msc and expand user->windows settings->internet explorer maintenance-> urls or osmething like that and look for the one that sets the home page. It might be in the computer policy also.
I use Microsoft Visual Basic 2005. (Therefore, most code samples I provide will be based around the .NET Framework v2.0, unless otherwise specified)

Alternatively, delete the value:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Start Page
Then when you next run, it hopefully should reset
And as NoteMe said, you really should use Spybot search and destory, has more power than Adware

And did you read the thread i linked to before? Perhaps there is a DLL library sat in your System root, which needs un-registering and deleting.
To un-register a DLL an example would be:
Start > Run >
Code:
regsvr32 /u "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mydll.DLL"

MadBoy i went into the Registry to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\
Now i see registry settings for Default_Page_URL, Local Page and Start Page. All have the value of C:\WINDOWS\secure.html. Now when i right click on a registry entry and modify it how do i save the changes? When i use the System Configuration Editor i can save any changes but i see no way of saving any changes when i close down the Registry Editor.

It happens straight away with the registry editor, that's why you gotta be careful.

As ideas man said, be careful. Usually its best to frequently backup your registry when making changes. Seeming as your computer basically is the registry (it hods all settings, configurations, details etc). So once you have modified a value, deleted a key whatever, it is already stored.
Oh, you should try deleting the whole startup page key, dont worry, it will be set back next time you run Internet Explorer.
And ill ask again, did you try the link i posted above?
It seems your Internet Explorer has been hijacked like mine was before, if this is the case id make sure you try and get a fix ASAP. Especially if you might broken security patches in your IE, which considering its a Microsoft product, there more than likely will be.
Hope you fix it

Still the changes do not take stay. Why is this? Dosen't matter if i simply change the value of a key or delete the whole key.

DON'T run the search tool....Start the advanced mode then go to tools, and then go to Browserpages... Always listen to me...(
What's advanced mode? Do you mean tools --> Internet Options --> Advanced Tab?

I meen SpyBot....if you have installed it on your computer there is two verisons of the interface. If you have a desktop icon to it is probably not the one for the advanced mode. So go yo start->application->spybot advanced. There you can find tools and so on....

Yes i have a desktop icon. I see no advanced mode anywhere on the interface.
So what i actually stopping the registery from being updated and saved? Ive ran Ad-aware 6.0, Spybot, and scanned my comp numerous times using various tools from other sites.
I think the problem is that these scanning programs only detect new registery entries not whether the value of a key has been changed.

goto www.moosoft.com and download the 30-day trial of The Cleaner, one of the powerfullest Troajn removals ever built. Included with it is a TCA monitor, which checks for opened, modified keys and even programs trying to change them. If you are looking for something that checks for the above, i reccomend downloading it and giving it ago

I downloaded the Cleaner and scanned my system. Non of the modified keys were fixed. Under options --> General it's configured to run TCActive and TCMonitor at start up.

Maybe it can only detect keys that were modified after it was installed?
