    Internet Explorer is rooted

    Hi All,

I'm having a few problems with IE at the moment. On my brothers computer, when ever he requests ANY web page, it comes up with Page Cannot be Displayed error.

Anyone had this happen to them before? I have temporarily put him on firebird 0.6, until I can be bothered fixing IE (somehow) and putting firefox 0.8 on.

    Thanks in advance,
    Tim.

What version of IE and is it bundled or installed as an update?
I use Microsoft Visual Basic 2005. (Therefore, most code samples I provide will be based around the .NET Framework v2.0, unless otherwise specified)

It's the standard version that comes with XP. I haven't installed any updates or service packs, except for blaster updates a few months ago.

    I guess IE6.0..

    Any ideas?
    Tim.

Yeah, to reinstall IE, you'll need your Windows XP CD handy, Click Start->Run and type in: rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf

Here's a Microsoft knoledge base article for it as well, the other method is better.

lol, you have a good memory..

As soon as I have access to his PC I'll give that a shot.

Thanks for your help, I'll post back later with the results.

Well, after it went through its file copy i tried running internet explorer again, same error.. I'm just checking now if it will run a webpage from the local machine, but at this stage it looks like a complete re-install is on the way.

Yep, it ran the test web page I made OK, so its ok for that.. My brother runs MSN and mozilla, they both run fine.. what connection settings in IE can I try to change?

    Thanks in advance,
    Tim.

If it connects directly to the internet, check and make sure that there are no proxy settings set.

argh damn hotmail frames not letting me post..

anyways, his computer connects to the internet through my computer, usin ICS (internet connection sharing)..

The ICS has had a few problems, but I've nailed them down, but the thing getting me is that all the other internet related programs work, mozilla firebird 0.6 can read web pages fine, MSN is perfecto, IE can read local pages, but not any online.

From memory he used to have a search toolbar and homepage, something like "MySearchWeb". came with its own homepage, and whenever you typed something in the address bar, it would search for that word.. Now I'm pretty sure it was my brothers PC that did this.. maybe it was one of me mates..

Anyhoo I deleted this MySearchPage.html from some directory in his windows folder, then changed the homepage back. I also set "Don't search from Address Bar" in the IE advanced options... Is there a registry key somewhere that may have gone wrong..

    Thanks in advance,
