what would you do: database trimming

So I have this database to trim down that has way too many entries that really dont need to be searched everytime the program searches the inventory. How do I get it to skip over these without deleting them.

Now heres the hard part: I didint design the softwaree - that programmer is long gone.

I was thinking of creating a separate database but is there a better way to do this?

    Ideas appreciated.

If the application is no longer in use and u'r gonna create a new one, I'd make the db over.

pull out the data u need, drop the rest.

    what db ?

Figure out the criteria for 'redundant' entries. Then delete them. Pretty simple, no?
