games or programs
I would say doom 3 halflife 2 and unreal tournament 2004 are harder to make than any other program. Only thing even comparable in difficulty would be compiler or sophisticated OS. Not sure a compiler would really be harder. Doom 3 complexity shouldnt be underestimated. most people couldnt understand the basic physics yet alone the crazy physics required for doom 3's lighting alone. SPeed is more important.

1. Why post this?
2. Doom3 is no where near as complex as an OS and probably not as complex as a good compiler either. You give Doom3 way too much credit.
3. I'm sure most, if not all users here could 'comprehend' the lighting and such in Doom3. IT ISN'T THAT FREAKIN SPECTACULAR! Though I'm not sure alot of the users here would understand the 'speed is more impotant part' since this is a VB forum.

I don't think that anyone here at the forum at all could make a Doom3 clone that had the same speed as the originale game. Neither I think that anyone could make Linux or Windows from scratch either. A compiler is harder to guess for. Becuase it depends on how much optimization you need. But I don't think anyone here could make a compiler that fast as the Vb6 or VC++ compiler....

If the intent of the original post was to get at "What is the most difficult sub-area within programming?", I think he has a point. I do a fair amount of database front ends, but that takes relatively little brain power. A clever and original AI, however, takes some real imagination.

I'd say games are harder to code, OSs are harder to design.
