Talking replacing the processor, would they know?

if I buy the exact same processor that I have (3ghz p4) and replace mine with the new one and return mine to the store... would they know that I've exchanged them? I know processors have serial numbers, but is that usually recorded somewhere in the store?

Probably not, as long as you got all of the thermal paste/glue/pad/grease (whatever you used) off of it.

Not sure why you'd want to do this though. If the processor is the same, I don't see how you'd gain ANYTHING unless your CPU is dead.

The chances are the store won't even look... but when they send it back to their supplier it'll be returned to the store and the DOA permit will be withdrawn.

If you paid by card... the store can trace you and can by law ask you to return the correct item. If it ever went to court, they'de drop the case as it'd cost 'em far more than the price of a CPU

It wouldn't cost them anything, as you'd be charge for fraud (?) by the state.
