Does anyone know how to use a dictionary of words with the MS Speech-to-Text control?
Seems a pain in the ass to have to put all the words directly into the program.

I believe you are referring to the Direct Recognition control. (Text-to-speech only speaks the text).
In this case, try to see if there's a dictionary of words shipped with your word processor (MSWord, WordPerfect, etc.) and use the GrammarFromFile method to load it.

Here's the link. Unfortunately, you can't get the previous version (4.x).
This new version(5.0) is huge!
Here is the old version link. I don't know if it still available.
Download the Text-to-speech engines and the Direct Speech Recognition control.
