What do you guys think about delphi?

Ive bounced around from vb to c++ back to vb to vb.net trying to find a comfortable versatile language.

A friend is a fluid delphi programmer, and is offering to tech me that. What do you guys think about delphi as a whole?

Delphi rocks. There are thousands of free Delphi componants that are all open source and what-not. I say go for it and see what you think of it. I have a friend who is a master of Delphi and he goes no other way for application programming. I have used it but am not very well versed in it, but just what I have used it for makes it rock.

    I don't.

I tried my hand at it a while ago. So I don't think about it.

    (First Impression) Good 4 starters

I taught myself for less than a week, and got a running program that manipulates files.

By far, has more functions that makes programming life a little bit easier... :-)

That kind of post does a great job expressing your intelligence. Maybe telling my WHY you think it sucks would be more helpful

I'm not comparing C++ to Delphi, I am just simply stating that it is better than Delphi and that is all he needs to know on the subject.

That is an ignorant response (not flaming, just being informative). If you want to write a simple database application with an attractive GUI, would you write it in C++ (my guess is even if you are a wham-bam-thank-you-m'am kind of badass programmer you would still end up taking 10x as long to program that than anyone with a descent amount of coding experience in any RAD type language) or in Delphi?

From what I understand, Delphi is alot like VB, except you don't have to worry with packaging a bunch of run-time files with a simple Delphi program. Other than that, I don't know much more about it other than it looks like VB with ;'s

I just want more information from those with more experience than me, and not the "C++ is better than everything and you suck for not being a l33t C++ h@x4r".

Thanks for you opinions so far, I have the feeling its a great language, it has (I think) all of the benefits of the RAD of VB, but without the drawbacks of including run-times in simple applications. It may not be low level like C++, but lets compare apples with apples. Like how does it stack up to languages like VB, VB.Net and C# (or really any of the .net languages).

I am so inquisitive because it seems so great from what I know, but if it was then why aren't there any forums here to support it, like there are for other languages besides VB?

I would write it in C# if I needed it done quickly, otherwise C++ it is.

This isn't the forum for any serious arguement/questions (I figured you would have figured that out when I posted my comment, but I guess the funny escapes you).

Well, the only other forum I saw that could have been appropriate doesnt have much activity Besides, it is kinda chit chat... but with a meaningful (for me) conversation.

Have you ever used delphi, or is it that your just happy with c#?

You may need a good fast computer to run Delphi. On a fresh restart, with no programs opened (free resources starting at about 92%) it took me 5 minutes to load the IDE and everything, my free resources soon dropped to 16%

Its good, but the structure can be confusing, even from the basics of the menus. It is quite powerful, i would of used it instead of VB apart from the fact that its worse than AOL in terms of memory management

I learned it in school and couldn't stand it.

By now I've forgotten just about everything.

Delphi is only RAD and fast DB with Borland Delphi Builder, but so is C++ with Borland C++ Builder.
    Don't confuse languages with IDEs.
