Convert from WMV & ASF to whatever ?
I'm concerned about the quality no matter the size is . Basically , I'm making some VCDs that paly in a DVD Player . I believe I can't use any Dvix format to play them off the DVD player . Right ?
So , any good programs I can use instead of the one I'm using which is nero plugin for VCD/DVD that takes ages to encode the files .?
Thanks .

You aren't too clear with that question. You better first find out what your player can play.
All I know is that you can't convert WMV and for ASF you need to get enough old VirtualDub to convert it to an AVI file. Microsoft is very much against converting WMV and ASF to other formats...
What to do? Well, don't use WMV and ASF, ever.
VirtualDub can create AVI files and encode them using supported codecs (such as DivX and XviD). There is also a modded version that can handle OGM. I don't know about MKV (Matroska) support at the moment. Of these formats only DivX is somewhat supported by hardware players, XviD has become a little more popular, I don't know about OGM's situatation and MKV is having a discussion for future support on hardware.
Please note OGM and MKV are not codecs: these can both have DivX or XviD video. OGM and MKV can be multilingual, include many dubs and subs... of these MKV is "better", it has richer subbing support and it is generally more like DVD than OGM.
Sorry, I got on a sidetrack, but atleast you got some background. I hope

Ok , I'll try to explain clearer :
I've got some ASF and WMV files (I hate them but what can I do I downloaded them) on my machine . I have CD burner that burns these files into VCD . I want to play these VCD off the VCD/DVD Player . It's all fine now but before I burn them , Nero asks me to encode them first to Dat or MPG files . This is the annoying part . It takes me 1hour to encode so I thought it's more convenient to convert them first and burn them by anyother software . Is my question any clearer now ?
Thanks for the info though .

Well, no matter what you do, it'll take long to re-encode the files. I have no experience on VCD side, as computer is my primary player for anything.
Guess creators of Nero have paid MS for having a converter. For free, you might get a converter only illegally, if there is any. ASF and WMV are most often bad quality... and thus people prefer the free hq formats and don't create tools for MS's formats.
