cpu clock/bios problem

Hi!

I just baught a new motherboard and CPU...its an EPoX EP-8K9A7 and an AMD Athlon XP2600+ Barton (1.917 GHz)

When i finished the assembly and turned it on, it showed that the clock speed was at 1150 MHz, so i entered BIOS to change the speed... i set it to 100x20 MHz, but when rebooting, it was still at 1150 MHz! What's wrong? Can i set the BIOS to automaticly determine the CPU speed?

Try finding the latest firmware for ur bios and flash it... Might be possible the MB u have does not support the chip..


Also try refering to ur MB manual and set the correct frequeny jumper.

the MB should support it. i baught it as a package from a company that has probably sold alot of them...
i'll take a closer look at the manual...

Check the Front Side Bus jumper. It might still be on the board. most often you get a board that support lower fsb's, so by default a jumper is placed to set the lower fsb. This of course drops the speed of your cpu signifcantly. If this is the case, removing the jumper and setting the approriate fsb in bios should get you up to speed.

Check your manual for where the jumoer is and the bios settibg.

go into the bios and find front side bus and multiplier probably in advanced chipset options.
2600 / 166 = multiplier thats if your processor is 333 fsb

i have an amd athlon xp cpu which mean that the model name (2600) is how fast it is compared to a pentium cpu...its only 1.9 ghz but it is as fast as a pentium 2600 mhz so i should not set the frequency to 2600.
even if i try to change it to 1.9ghz it doesnt change at all...it shown correct in bios, but when i boot up the comp, it only shows 1150mhz.

You need to increase your FSB clock to match the CPU's and your RAM's.

Your CPU clock is the FSB times the CPU's multiplier. The CPU multiplier is typically locked, but the FSB can be set freely.

Be careful not to overclock the FSB beyond specs without properly cooling.

FYI: This always happens. You must almost always set the FSB manually, as most bios come in 'fail-safe' mode. Which has options sets to allow any type of CPU to be placed, and the compter will function. The default 100 Mhz FSB is just for compatibility.

If your CPU is rated for 266 MHz FSB(DDR), then set the FSB to 133. If it's rated for 333 MHz FSB(DDR) then set it to 166.

Except to reset the CMOS... my board has one jumper. Gotta love ABit.

Yeah. MY board is less than a year old and has a jumper to switch between FSB 200/266

i only have one jumper and it's for clearing cmos...

as i said, when i changed in bios and then rebooted, the bootup screen showed me that the cpu was on 1150mhz, but when i re-ntered bios to check, everything whas correct.


here is the specs for the cpu:
AMD Athlon XP2600+ Barton 333 MHz bus - Socket A 1.917 GHz, 512k cache

now, what do i change in bios to get correct freq?

i changed the FSB to 166, and it recogniced the cpu! thanks alot
