I'm not a great fan of Sylvester Stallone but one film of his that I do like is "Demolition Man". There is one scene in it where he is doing some needlework (!!! If you haven't seen it - don't ask!!!) and he says something like "So now I'm Betsy f***ing Ross".
Can any of our American friends tell me who Betsy Ross is? Does she have an embroidery TV show or something?

She was a seamstress (or something) who knocked up the first rebel flag for those revolting Yanks (at least they were in 1776 )
N.B. to all my US chums - that's a joke.
Cheers,
Paul.

She was credited for making the first stars and stripes American flag.....not the rebel flag!

From an English point of view, that IS the rebel flag. The Stars and Bars is just internal politics.
Joking, really.
Yours internationally,
Paul.

Yikes, four under fours, you're keen aren't you Paul?
I hate to be pedantic, but technically 'lol' stands for 'laughs out loud'.

'Fraid so Barrk And I'm pretty reliable on this, I played Ultima Online (it's an online role playing game) just about every day for two years, and people are constantly saying 'lol', 'rofl', 'lmao' and other such abbreviations. There are quite a lot, see if you can recognise them/figure them out:
rofl
lmao
cya
brt
omw
omg
brb
afk
That's all the ones I can remember off the top of my head.

usage: barrk thought lol meant lot's of love (rofl)
cya
definition: cover your ass(arse?)
usage: If you're going to claim to know something you'd better cya.
omg
definition: oh my god
usage: omg, barrk is such an idiot(rofl)

LOL doesn't mean "Lot's of Love...." It means "Laughing Out Loud."
Harry, here are some of the translations to your list:
cya = See Ya
brb = Be Right Back
One I use is CUL8R, which means See You Later.
Hope that helps....

Well not bad so far Yep, 'cya' means 'see ya'. 'CUL8R' is an example of another popular family of abbrevs (note the irony ) like 'w8 up', 'l8r' and 'm8'.
I should mention that some of the aforementioned abbreviations are sort of specific to online gaming, but could be applied to a normal conversation I guess. As a an example and a clue for the others, 'brt' means 'be right there'.
