    Any Gentoo users?

Is this a good distrobution of Linux? Thinking of ditching Mandrake and trying something else.

    www.gentoo.org

Click on installation guide, download live CD.

Follow directions and you'll have a gentoo box up before you know it.

    Hi, I use Linux.

I like to tell everyone they aren't really using an operating system if they are using Microsoft. I like to say things like "I just upgraded my kernel to 1.3.4.2.6.12.7.1c, I don't like it as much as 1.3.2.5.32.56.7b, but at least it's not 1.4.5.7.287.2 d!"

I get along really well with C++ coders, we can exchange bashes, except I use the terms "Linux" and "Microsoft" where they use "C" and "VB".

I pride myself that it takes me 30 hours a week to maintain my Linux system. It really gives me something good to do in between episodes of Xena.

I get really mad when I find out how much a Microsoft admin makes, so I make fun of them. I also get mad that no one actually USES Linux, so I can't make the same kind of money. Plus there is the fact that Unix admins still make fun of me, I mean, hey, I know Unix! I run Linux!

Secretly, I keep a machine with Windows 2000 on it hidden away, for those times when I actually want to USE a computer and not configure it endlessly, but don't tell anyone.

    Sincerly,

    Linux User

You're a moron. If anything, Linux requires almost no upkeep and maintanence. The server my site is hosted on it RedHat 7. It has an uptime of about 7 months so far. Before then, it was about 6 months when the computer was firsted put online.

No settings changed, almost zero maintanence required (except when cPanel ****s up).

When I install Linux OR Windows, both I setup how I like it, and then I NEVER have to touch any settings. If you have to spend 30 hours a week to maintain your Linux system, you shouldn't be using Linux.

Do you realize that more than 50% of ALL webservers use FreeBSD, Linux or some other OS other than Microsoft's software? Do you realize that in most cases, Unix and Linux admins make MORE money than Microsoft admins? It's true, look through monster.com. Almost every job posting that wants a Unix admin pays alot.

Do you know why? Because of people like you who think Microsoft is everything and you don't need to know anything else.

Configure it endlessly? Like I mentioned before, everytime I've ever installed ANY Windows version or Linux distro, I've set it up just how I wanted and have never needed to touch ANYTHING.

You can do anything on Linux you can do with Windows and since I currently have no job and I support OpenSource, I can use almost everything I use on my Windows machine on my Linux machine and vice versa.

Since this isn't chit chat, I was assuming your post was serious. If it is, in fact, serious, you should broaden your knowledge and learn about another OS because unleashing a blob of ignorant, and useless comments about it.

No reason to quit. But being in the IT industry, it is smart to be knowlegeable in different technologies. If I was to lose my current job, it would be nice if I could add Linux development to my resume increasing my chances of finding another job.

Is it me or does it seem like people who love doing things with computers try to learn everything they can?

You guys are talking about how you're both trying to learn all this ****, and it's the same damn thing I always do.

Well DX is the most widely used for games. But since I am trying to learn Linux development, I choose openGL. Just wish this online course I am in would pick back up. I have finished the first module, but the teacher has been busy with other classes to start the 2nd part.

    Are you complaining about something?

I learn everything that is currently important to development and the IT industry. I guess I could have stuck with my knowledge of QBasic years ago. But I probably wouldnt have a job now if I did, would I?
